Piggles website to find out more. See the horrific conditions
we found on our latest pig farm investigation – and read about them here.

Mother Earth Day of Action
Mother Earth: the giver of life, and the receiver of global warming and a near-approaching environmental catastrophe. For all the love, life and nurturing she has provided her inhabitants over the years, Mother Earth has received little thanks. Global warming, deforestation and polluted waters are some of the many ailments we have imposed upon the planet. Millions of animals – both wild and farmed – suffer and die because of the West’s desire for meat. Time is running out, we must act now to save the world.
This Mother’s Day, give Mother Earth the gift of life. We have produced a brand new leaflet and we’re asking young people across the country to get involved and get our point across in their classrooms! We’re holding a Week of Action, Monday, March 16 to Mothering Sunday (March 22) and we want you to get involved!
Ask your form tutor/favourite teacher if you can hold a Save Mother Earth week in your school/college/university. We’ll send you all the free materials you need; posters, leaflets, stickers and magazines.
Email our youth campaigner Fiona. Not forgetting adults, you can get involved too! Email our environmental campaigner Zephie to find out how.
Sign Our Badger Petition!
The Welsh Assembly will soon be deciding the future of badgers in Wales. Over 11,000 people have already voiced their opposition to the proposed cull by sending Viva! badger postcards to the Welsh Assembly, but the work mustn’t stop there. Viva! has launched a petition to stop the badger ‘cull’ from going ahead. Click here to sign to show your support for Welsh badgers and be sure to pass on the petition to friends and family.
Fish Industry Feeds Public a Red Herring
The Vegetarian & Vegan Foundation (VVF) tackled
the British fish industry head on at the end of January over claims that fish
is essential for health. VVF’s new fish campaign launched with a dying
mermaid, wrapped in nets, on the steps of Fishmongers’ Hall by London Bridge at the start of a one
day conference on Seafood and Health. The VVF’s message to delegates
‘Fish is not a Health Food’ was made loud and clear on banners
and copies of a new guide Fish-Free for
Life were handed out. Author of the guide, VVF senior health
campaigner Dr Justine Butler, says: “The fish industry is aiming to
increase its revenue by feeding the public a ‘red herring’ that
we need fish in our diets to protect our health. The scientific research
tells a different story... you can get all the omega-3s you need from a
plant-based diet, which does not contain harmful toxins found in fish
including PCBs, dioxins and mercury.”

White Meat gets
Black Mark in school dinners Parents in Cheltenham were warned about the dangers of feeding their children white meat earlier this month, as a new report reveals it can increase the risk of cancer and diabetes in later life. Viva!’s sister charity, the Vegetarian & Vegan Foundation (VVF) has produced a new report White Meat Black Mark, which found thoroughly cooking white meat, including chicken, duck and turkey, can generate hazardous chemicals known as HAAs, which are linked to cancer in humans. The VVF is calling on all LEAs to reduce or remove the amount of all meat – including white meat – from local school meals. Charlie the giant VVF chicken and the VVF team handed out FREE healthy lunch packs and information. He gave an ‘LEA representative’ dressed in a suit and dunce hat, a ‘black mark’ for allowing white meat to remain on school menus. Please show your support for more meat-free meals in schools by signing the relevant petition for your local area, below.

Your Viva!City
This email alert reaches thousands of people but we’d like your help to make it even better. At the moment we have just one list of addresses which means that we have to send the same email to everyone. From time to time we’d like to let people know about things happening in their area or get in contact with our younger supporters but we don’t want to fill everyone else’s mailboxes with information that isn’t relevant to them. What we’d like to do is compile email lists separated into different regions so that if we do have something we’d like to tell people in Scotland or Yorkshire about, we can send them the information without bothering anyone else.
The simplest way for us to identify which area you live in is to know your postcode and so we’d be grateful if you could take a minute to fill in our online questionnaire. We’d also really like to know your age if you’re under 18 – you can fill in your date of birth on the form. You won’t receive any postal mailings (unless you want them and fill in your other details) and the information will be used only to sort your email addresses. You don’t even have to give us your name if you don’t want to.
As ever, if you would like any more information about any of our campaigns, check out our website www.viva.org.uk or get in touch with us directly – contact details at the top of this email. Please don’t click “reply”, however – your email won’t be seen at that address.
Thanks again for all your support.
Note: Viva! does not forward emails from other sources or supply email addresses to other organisations. The only emails you receive as a result of being on this list come directly from us. Viva! has full and current virus protection.
