Dear Supporter
This alert isn't specific to Shropshire, but I thought I would circulate it
anyhow. I would like people to see what I believe is a serious fault within the
RSPCA.
I recently went to ASDA and, in the process of purchasing the only vegan thing I
could find on their menu, noticed that the RSPCA and Animal Hospital were
clearly identified on the boxes and menu of the Kids Meals. Sadly, there was no
vegan option for our children. Instead, they had to choose between Cheese
Sandwich (which was not marked suitable for veggies) and a ham sandwich. I
thought it was a bit off that the RSPCA benefited financially from something
which contained dead animals, probably from battery farms (for details on pig
farms see www.viva.org.uk).
I emailed the RSPCA and addressed my concerns, which were:
-> That the RSPCA benefit financially from the sale of meat
-> That the RSPCA did not take this opportunity to promote a veggie / vegan
diet or even its less than suitable Freedom Food 'less cruel' diet
-> That the RSPCA were sponsoring a meal of meat and cheese aimed at children,
enticing them with a free animal toy.
I felt it was outragous that the society should appeal to a childs innocence and
love of animals to sell something which amounts to little more than a sliced up
corpse from a battery farm.
The RSPCA have responded, and I feel that their reply is not satisfactory.
They state that they did not benefit financially from the meals, but simply from
the royalties they gained from the pictures on the boxes. They say that they
cannot dictate supermarket policies....I would take issue with this....if their
name is on the box, surely they can dictate what they like? I can't imagine the
Vegan Society or VIVA! would allow their name to be posted on a meat counter,
simply because they benefitted financially from it! Worryingly, they also
state:
"In an ideal world we would much prefer that supermarkets stocked only
Freedom Fod approved meat, eggs and dairy products."
One would hope, surly, that in an ideal world, we would not be keeping animals
in confinement so we could dine on their corpses and eat their young?!!
I think that this reply, including the above statement, highlights a very grave
problem. The RSPCA is, I would argue, clearly so bent on securing finances for
it's 'valuable work with animals' that it doesn't think twice about attributing
its name, whether intentionally or uninentionally, with an industry that kills
20 animals every second! Equally, they do not appear to see this as a failing,
nor do they intend to take action to remedy it.
If, like me, you share this concern, please email the RSPCA Corporate Relation
Manager, Helen Holmes, on hholmes@... or call her on Tel: 0870 7540 269
