unident hrd thurs night at 2210z weak arab with football match commentary on
1548. Am using SONY ICF SW1 which only has 9 khz offsets so wonder if possibly
the democratic Sahara station at Rabuni on 1550. Noted Kuwait listed on 1548
with 600KW but doubt it. El Aaioun on 711 blasting in at the time.

Any ideas

i have nothing against anyone logging "pips" but for me personally no spoken id or id by picture on tvdx i simply dont log it. its like cjvb on 1470 we all know the pips are theirs but would you be content with just that.

its the same with kbrw i untill recently never had an id from them but i knew it was them but it didnt go into the log untill i got a spoken id ... each dxer to their own but for me it has to be a spoken id BUT !! that is dxing trying to id the far east stuff its hard enough to id english ones lol cheers david h

Personally I try to get as close to 100% sure with every logging, but this isnt
always possible, some mistakes are inevitable.

Sometimes you can draw inferences from conditions and or channel usage - hearing
for example a long pip on 549 khz cant be anything else but Okinawa but on
another frequency where there is some doubt I personally wouldnt make the claim.

I was playing devils advocate with a few of the Matlock loggings more to get
discussion going about logging rather than any criticism of the actual logs. I
picked 6 out of 76 thats something like 8 % and of those the inferences drawn by
the logger are probably correct in the majority. Thats close to 100% accuracy.
Put it like this if I had a far eastern log to be reviewed Tim Bucknall is the
guy Id send it to.

As for the time pips as an identifier, for me Id go for something which can
defintely be tied to an individual station or network, not just the pips alone,
unless they could only come from one source on a given frequency.

As for TV DX with no pictures that never really appealed to me.

Hiya,

It all comes down to the question of personal standards
AND personal ideas of fun.
Let us be broad-minded in that respect.
After all, the easier the criteria, the more you enter
in your logbook, the faster you reach the hard limit.
If you take in all that's on the air in a short time,
you're left with the task of finding new horizons sooner.
For that matter, I never tried to do any TV DX with the
sole carrier traces on Spectran as a proof because first it was technically
boring and then what's the use of logging Cameroon if you never end up with a
picture ? But why not let other aficionados get their kicks out of it
?
Same with MW stations, I prefer to starve for weeks
rather than officialising the piles of "tentatives" .
I'd be over 100 stations if I did.
But you have to admit that everyone sees Noon in their
own private garden as we say in French.
Think of NDBs (beacons) some people play by (Spectran)
screen and wait for the dots and lines to be neat on the monitor, others by ear,
some with filters, some without.
As long as you re accurate on how you came to your
conclusions, there's no harm to my mind.
I've set my own assessment chart for TA DX that puts me
now (with Mexico City's Formula ) at 22/40 but it will be a sad day when I reach
40. Coz it seems very unlikely to me to catch Vanuatu or the funky Samoans on MW
from this here shack.
Cheers de Pat

Hi,
     Today on a wet afternoon I erected a Flag antenna, 30ft top x 15ft
verticals,
the orientation is 340 degrees ( by compass ) being a product of the house /
mast siting.
I would appreciate what I should be looking for from US stations, if any !!!!
One my Great Circle map it would seem to favour a line Greenland - White Horse
?????
Expert opinions most welcome.

Ok after looking again at the Matlock loggings im going to play devils advocate
and urge a bit of caution with the following ones: Since Korea and Japan have
the same time pips and in the absence of other identifying material.

567 JOIK NHK-1, Sapporo, ex weak Time sig, ID (personal first) 222 1400
18/11 TB/JF (HLKF also here with 100kw)

1215 HLAK MBC, Jinju , time signal just audible in lucky UK Audio gap
during LG ad (personal first) 111 1400 18/11 TB/JF ( two Japanese here 1 kw / 2
kw)

1224 HLAA KBS 3, Gwangju, usual 875hz time pip 222 1400 18/11 TB/JF (10 kw NHK1
also here)

1377 JOUC NHK-2, Yamaguchi, ex poor pips behind CNR & UK (personal
first) 222 1400 18/11 TB/JF (several other lower powered Japanese here)

765 HLCQ MBC, Daejon distinctive pip way behind RUS 111 1600 18/11 TB/JF (Two 5
kw Japanese here)

1098 HLCJ KBS 1, Jinju, time sig in TWN audio break 222 1400 18/11 TB/JF
(Several 5 kw Japanese here)

feel free to shout at me now :-)

Hi John,

yeah you are right those time pips are unique. First time I heard them I knew
they were something special and not something I'd run into before.

In saying that I have my own qualms about using them as loggings BUT to be
absolutely honest Im probably being overly anal. Its clear what they are and
where they are coming from. Theres not much difference between them and say a
Radio Reloj morse ident.

On the afternoon of the 6th I had them on 549 567 603 612 747 828 837 891 1017
1071 1170 probably Korea 1188 1197 1224 1233 single note higher pitch 1242 1287
1368 1386 1467 probably Korea 1503 Strong 1512 1593.

Had yourself and Tim been out the previous afternoon I think your tally would
have been double - I was hearing the "music box" weak on 1593 / 828 just after
1600.

It kind of shows however the limitations of our "pretend" home antennas :-(
that and the bloody noise most of us have to put up with.

I want to live on the edge of a peat bog!

Hi. Well set the clock for 07.30 BST sunrise time so the web said, for my try
out at MW dxing, not new to it but had left it some years ago, what have they
done to the band the qrm is very heavy could be local to me but not all. Here is
my report such as it is.
RX Kenwood TS 460 bandwidth 2.4 khz.
07.42 on 0.660khz WFAN NY advert, voice level just above a whisper.
08.10 on 1.130khz WBBR NY man-women talk, voice level a bit better.
08.15 on 1.520khz WWKB NY poss - very weak.
Well NY was coming in but far from well! My QRM seems not only to be mains
bound but air bound as well so must do a walkabout or not use the mains rx,
reception MUST get better, not at least I heard something, I think my Degen DE
1130 might do a better job! Thanks John F for the bearings a great help. Mike

Hello Brian.

That's right, threading the wires through the trees would be more
time-consuming, but we might just do that for an Alaskan trip.
Directivity has always been improved when the wire is a metre or more
above the ground. The BOG works pretty well anyway.

Then there's the curious members of the public. We were watched by
somebody the other day while they parked their car next to the beverage
feed point and scrutinised the connections. It puts me off a bit.

Cheers

John

Hello Paul.

We were surprised by the number of Oriental stations which came through
on the day. This is no doubt due to having a clear, noise-free band.
Also, remember that virtually all the stations in our log are multiple
100s kW anyway so theoretically they SHOULD get out reasonably well.

We have no problems with people questioning the loggings as many DXers
would not dream of counting time pips as a form of identification, but
it's no different to carrier measurement. Each of these things represent
another method of working out what you have received and those time pips
are unique.

If Perseus owners wish to hear our DX they can visit the Skywaves SDR
Filesharing group and download the top-of-the-hour files. It's all there.

Good DX!

John

John,
Once again a nice tale of derring do by the intrepid duo, well done !!!!
I assume that the Matlock ' Forest ' is not quite so, threading wires though
the trees would be a bit of a struggle ????

Hi all,

the amazing thing about this log is that it was made on a pretty terrible day
for far eastern reception (compared to some days recently)

Amazing stuff, it has inspired me to think of some possible expeditions over the
winter.

Hats off to John and Tim.

That's right Jurgen. Thanks for the correction. Tim emailed me this
evening to explain that he had got a couple of the stations/sites confused.

If the logging is stated with just "time pips" then that is all that was
heard. It's a shame there was not more audio on some of the signals, but
clearly these were the stations which got through, albeit very weakly.
As explained in the article, the time pips are quite unique and we
thought it was better to include them in the log to show the DX
possibilities. There is nothing else they could have been.

John

Thank You JOHN. I do have the details of the FLAG antenna, I think its 25 feet
top by 2 x 10 feet drop down each end with a 850 ohm resistor hope thats right
or like a inverted U, getting that resistor or mix of same maybe a problem for
me here in the back woods of beyond. My Problem - about a week ago brain dead
under me came up and he thinks I have some form of into the floor death ray up
here, I called the police and last tuesday he got a finale council warning,
thing is I am - plus my wife and others in this block of 4 flats are now quite
worried to go outside so we are all ducking and diving with our movements, yes
what a way to live, the bottom line is I can only do things while he and his
partener are out getting stoned, such a wire down the garden may upset him,
could such a FLAG antenna be put in a loft, BTW I have a T2FD here hope you and
others know what that is, that was down the garden for a while, but we got re
tiled and I never put it up again. Thanks for the bearings, at the moments its
all up to the loop. I have been noteing your logs, well I did get to Taiwan,
hearing Family Radio must have been right time, right conditions, freq was 1.557
at 15.15 BST REL prog was on air, that is some going for a loop. Many Thanks.
Mike.

This was our most successful Matlock Forest DX trip so far!

This time we were able to eliminate the interference from the Megane car
electronics which resulted in a lovely quiet band. I wondered if this
might have been due to a slightly different beverage arrangement.
Instead of using a terminating resistor (it failed on the day) we simply
terminated the far end of the beverage straight to earth. The beverage
was laid on the ground as usual.

One thing which aided station identification was the time signals which
are aired by each country. While I realise this will not provide
positive station identification for some DXers, it proves that the
stations themselves were getting through. Time signals are like morse
code in the way that they are able to penetrate the noise, even when
very weak, and the time signals of China, Korea and Japan are very
distinctive. Tim explains:

"The Japanese (NHK) & Korean time pips (they only have one pip each)
were measured at 875Hz. They are virtually identical and longer than
other countries pips. A distinctive characteristic of these is that they
gradually fade out. Also note that Japanese & Korean time pips are
always on time. Chinese six pips are sometimes late and were heard as
much as 16 seconds after the top of the hour. Useful characteristics of
the Chinese pips are that the first five pips were measured at 800Hz and
the sixth pip at 1600Hz - one octave higher! The Taiwanese stations we
heard did not have time pips. Also worthy of note is that some of the
Russian time pips are also late, particularly the Siberian stations.
i.e. Surgut on 225kHz was 2 seconds late when heard by Tim on the 18th Nov."

We were amazed to note that sometimes two and as many as three different
Chinese transmitters were heard on some frequencies. 540 was a good
example where three sets of pips were heard, all a few seconds apart
from each other. We have listed these in the log as "multi tx".

Hello Mike.

If you want North America, you need to be beaming a flag aerial
approximately 270 - 300 degrees for the east coast DX. Slightly higher
at 330 degrees to catch west coast DX. It varies with conditions and
stations are often a little off-beam.

The best time for UK DXers to listen to North America is around local
sunrise, but the DX can often be heard from late evening.

Conditions have been disappointing for the last few days, however there
have been one or two exotic stations getting through from further west
while the east coast regulars have been subdued. Note my reception of
CBR and KSL yesterday. DXers north of the border are hearing much more.
Being located at a higher latitude brings its rewards.

Good DX!

John

Hi

Just to let you know that thursday afternoon, I heard a UNID programme between 1530 and 1645 utc on 1287 khz behind Spain. No ID
As it was not synchro with 6973 khz  I ruled out Galei Tsahal.
The man was reading a long list in which the same words came over and over, among them "kilohertz AM" and "érikomo".
When the signal eventually peaked and wiped Spain away, I came back to the Hebrew hypothesis coz some words sounded like numbers in Hebrew.
The language was definitely not of the Turkic family nor from the Farsi/Pachto/Kurdi family.
I'm more or less left with the certainty that Galei Tsahal has 2 programmes at that time, one on 1287 and one on 6973 .
Can someone shed some light on this ?
If needed, I can post a clip on box.net sometimes over the weekend.

Cheers de Pat
