Re: [SmallHolding] Digest Number 304

Hi

As someone has started off, I'll add my 'two-pennorth' for the good of the
group and tell you a bit about me and my interest in the group.

I have a good sized garden and one and a half plots on a local allotment
site. At one time I grew all the vegetables that the family used (apart from
maincrop spuds) although work & other responsibilities don't allow me the time
to do so now, no matter how much I want to.
We keep bantams (I have two of this year's black-red Old English Game bantam
cockerals looking for homes if anyone's interested) and over the years have
kept rabbits, full sized hens, pheasants, guinea fowl, ducks & quail together
with the occasional orphan lamb on a friend's field, we've also relied heavily
on game and wild-harvested foods.
My particular interest is herbs, especially mint, sage and onion varieties and
the south american 'Inca' crops.
While I live in hope of eventually moving somewhere that will allow me to do
everything in the one place, I'm committed to practicing as much of a
self-sufficient lifestyle as I can from the garden, allotments, a friend's
field and what I can harvest from the wild while still earning enough to pay
the mortgage and provide for the kids. Hopefully this group links me to other
like-minded individuals.
BTW, I live 1200' up a welsh mountain!

Hope that this is of some interest to the group members and that it will stir
up some conversation.

Best wishes for 2006

Dave

Hi Amanda

So - let's get it started! Where are you? Have you got a garden? If
so, have you thought of getting a few chickens and growing some
veggies? There's no limit on how "small" a "smallholding" can be...!
