Re: [SmallHolding] pigs

Pigs are brilliant.
If you keep other livestock they will eat up any of their waste food or non
meat produce such as unfresh milk, whey, eggs etc. They will clear weeds from
your veg patch and manure it. You need lots of corregated tin sheets to make a
pen and a house, and straw or bracken for bedding which then is added to your
compost heap. I collect waste from my local veg shop 3 times a week which means
the owner has not got to pay to dispose of it and the pigs eat everything us and
the other livestock won't. If you buy in a couple of weaners, try to do so when
you are going to have a glut of, milk or weeds before they are in the freezer. I
take ours to a local abatoir just a few miles away, but you can kill pigs at
home still.
With weaners you only need have them when it suits so you can work them
around holidays etc, they will only be with you for a very few months for pork,
longer for bacon.
Drawback are that they will not live behind electric fencing until they are
trained to it, not a problem if you use a solid fence behind the electric until
they realise what it is that zaps them, then never leave it turned off as they
do check it regularly.

hello all, I am looking into the pros & cons of keeping one or maybe
two pigs. Anyone out there gone down this road. How, when the time
comes, do you go about getting it killed & butchered? Any thoughts
welcome? All the best Dave.
