They are the original sheep taken to Iceland by the Vikings. No import
has been allowed since Viking times, so they are certainly an old
breed : )
They are medium sized, come in all the colour variations that Shetland
sheep do (grey, black, patchy, badgerfaced, ginger, cream etc) and may
be horned or polled. They are good prolific lambers and the meat is
excellent with most of the fat being stored under the skin rather than
throughout the muscle (so relatively low-fat if you trim the fat off
after cooking!). The wool is beautiful, soft, long staple, great for
spinning/weaving/felt making etc.
Plus they are just very nice characters...
