Have you heard of a 'group' call freecycle? It's a
yahoo group that most area's (in the UK, not sure
about other countries) have one and it's to keep
things out of land fill.
It works by people who have something they no longer
need but might be of use to someone else posting an
'offered' message and then anyone who could make use
of that item can email back asking for it. You can
also sometimes post 'want' messages, the rules are
different for each group about these, if there is
something that you are looking for.
You might find that you can pick up some of the things
you need for your building work of off there, for
free.
Even if you're not in the middle of doing up a
building you can still get some really useful stuff of
from there, and you can always offer things you don't
need anymore and pass them on to somewhere where
they'll be used.
