I think before people jump in and try to move things in their
favour, they should consult the local Authority By-Laws which can be
found in any Library.
Trying this tactic without first researching what can and cannot be
done, could have dire consequences further on down the line!
When living in Cheshire many years ago, I bought a Pig and some
chickens and installed them on a Council Estate! Great!
The neighbours complained and the Environmental people came down on
me like a ton of bricks! But guess what?
The Council had never revoked the Laws enforced during the War that
allowed people to keep animals for self sufficiency purposes!
All I had to do was ensure that their housing was adequate and they
didn't cause a nuisance (Cocks crowing etc..). The waste I used as
manure on the gardens which was of course of great benenfit to me
also!
So before you jump in, try researching the issue at hand!
Some of the things mentioned in this petition are already allowed in
most areas!
Karen has it right when she mentions conservation areas and the
like, but they are there for a reason! Heaven forbid we all tried to
chip away of what remains of the Countryside to suit our own ends
for the short time we are here on this Earth!
NOBODY is making Land these days! We have to manage with what we
have! People have managed like this for thousands of years!
Farm Gate Sales are a no-no with the restrictions imposed for
smallholders both here in Ireland and the UK. So BEWARE!
Many Councils allow the building of Dwelling houses if you have
livestock (in a reasonable quantity), as you do have to be able to
look after your animals responsibly!
Ask questions, consult the Councils Planning Dept. and Evironmental
Health People. More importantly ATTEND TRAINING COLLEGES to show you
have the commitment to your proposals!
Do things sensibly and it could pan out for you.
Lastly, if you want to run a farm, BUY ONE!
(Or, rent one from the County Council itself, most Councils do have
them!).
Cheers
