I would have thought that my power supply was ok but I will try a 12v SLA
batteryand see if any different. My supply is 15Vac , bridge rectifier and 7812
three terminal reg with the appropriate capaciters. Should be good for 1A if
ever needed. might add a few more microfarads smoothing.

This kind of behaviour often results from using a power supply that
isn't pure DC. It needs to be regulated 12 - 15V. What are you using?
Can you try something else to eliminate the power supply as the cause?
