Saturday March 125th 2008 - there is a meeting about the proposed plans
for a new Memorial Hall to be built on the Lye on the old cricket
pavilion site. This means the Hall will be demolished and have STC
social housing built in its place, and the new Hall will be built on
the Lye and act as a Club House for the sports facilities and a Hall
with an entertainments and alcohol licence. It is likely to be used for
weddings, parties and a whole host of events. All the existing Hall
Users will continue to meet there as well as many more.
Are you happy about that - say so if you are. Say so if you are not.
Interesting views about anti social behaviour, noise, glass etc. Has anyone any views about how the Memorial Hall proposal will affect such behaviour ? Will noise and vandalism increase through greater useage or decrease as better facilities available ?
Should the Memorial Hall run a Youth Club to provide additional entertainment for the young in the village ? Will the car park in the woods attract more undesirables, or deter them ?
Your views wil help The Council shape their policies in the future. Please post them here.
Over the recent summer months, on many (most?) weekend evenings there
has been a lot of noisy activity in the Lye (coming from the secluded,
heath and wooded area beyond the football pitch). Just after we'd had
the fire back in April, I walked through the area and there was
evidence of other fires having been lit, along with the usual, empty
bottles and cans. The police are aware of the problem but
this does not seem to have deterred those responsible for the
antisocial behaviour.
I walked along St Johns Lye road this morning and thought just how
lovely it was to look across the cricket pitch towards the trees on
the other side, and how tranquil it all was. What a shame it will be
if the council go ahead with their plans to build the new village hall
on the Lye and we lose that view and the feeling of space forever.
We have been living next to the Lye for ten years, and enjoy the
village enormously. There is a great community spirit and nearly
every one that you meet is friendly and caring.
When we first moved here, in 1996, there was a cricket pavilion, and
the Lye was often used for matches at weekends and in summer
evenings.
Since we have been here, we have seen the removal of the pavilion,
the resurfacing and renovation of the car park, and the
refurbishment of the playground. All of which have made small
differences to village life, but none of which has had a major
impact.
The biggest impact that we have seen, and I would welcome the views
of others, is that there has been an increase in anti-social use of
the Lye. It seems to me that the young people who have nowhere else
to go, who frequent the playground, car park and surrounding paths
of the Lye are showing ever less respect for their environment,
neighbours and even the police.
So often, in the mornings, we see not only broken glass on the
playground, but branches of trees maliciously damaged, and a general
littering, despite the presence of many litter bins (which
admittedly are often full to overflowing).
What I find even more frustrating, is that the anti-social behaviour
is no longer limited to the night-time. More and more young people
are gathering during the daytime, often intimidating others.
Any proposed developments of the Lye should consider very carefully
the impact on the village, and should endeavour to keep the area a
place of peace, quiet and tranquility. I fear that the council plans
to turn St Johns into a centre for sports and leisure activity,
which will exclude those who wish to use the area as a haven for
rest and relaxation, a chance to reflect on the natural beauty of
the Surrey countryside.

At the moment this site is Moderated. This means messages are checked before they are put up onto the site. The purpose is to remove all the Spam, of which there is much. I have deleted about 10 messages so far and posted 2. So you can see there is a problem !
Generally speaking on-subject messages will be Accepted as they are sent. Any editing will only happen if messages are deemed to be personal attacks, spam, or of an unpleasant nature. Otherwise as soon as the Spam settles down the site will be opened and all messages will go on line.
Please read what has come through, add you views and encourage others - friends neighbours and Lye users - to do the same. This Forum is for EVERYONE not just SSJL supporters and not just SSJL opponents, everyone.
Just a couple of environmental and safety matters:
The Lye is a great place to live. It's a lovely peaceful
environment. However, we've noticed that the Lye is being used again
as an off-road race track by moped or motorbike riders. There are a
couple of cars doing the same. It usually takes place at night.
Also, has anyone noticed that there are quite a few cars being parked
on the pavement on the Lye near to Carolyn Close? A couple of elderly
gentleman (one walking with a stick) were forced to walk in the road
yesterday morning. The pavement surely should not be blocked from
being used by anyone, especially the older person or young children.
And what is someone supposed to do who happens to be a wheelchair user?
We're wondering if anyone else living on the Lye or the vicinity is
aware of these potentially serious matters and whether there is a
Community solution - rather than just notifying police, who may not be
able to do anything as the Lye is an unadopted road.
I like living in this village, because, in part, of the Lye. It is a
green space, uncluttered and a great place to walk and enjoy. I do not
want any development to take place, I just want it to remain as it is
and receive a bit more pro-active management.
The Council should do more to maintain it and preserve it, and should
not be supporting additional development.
