e-xpressions
Welcome
Welcome to the April edition of e-xpressions. My favourite Easter story is
that of the friends walking along the track to Emmaus as the sun was
setting. I have always wondered why on earth they didn't recognise Jesus
right away. Why did it take the intimacy of a shared meal and breaking of
bread to open their eyes to the truth about their companion? And yet as I
get to know more and more fresh expressions of church, I see a similar
journey taking place for many people. Those leading new forms of church talk
about the journey they are on with friends normally well off the radar of
the church. As they get to know them better, often by sharing a meal, they
begin to recognise Jesus in new ways. Becoming disciples, those who follow
the risen Christ, can be, no is, a lifelong journey and it is a privilege to
walk alongside others on that journey.
In fact, discipleship is at the heart of starting and sustaining fresh
expressions of church. That's why we talk about it on this month's podcast
(http://www.freshexpressions.org.uk/podcast). Have a listen to Andrew
Roberts and Dave Male talk about its importance, and listen to Judy Barber's
personal story. Also in the podcast this month, Mark Berry talks about his
pioneering work in Telford, but denies it is the most godless place in the
UK. He also asks some tough questions about leadership and ordination in our
podcast extra.
Resources
Have you discovered our seminar packs yet? Nine are available and are ideal
to use in a small group. They range from financing a fresh expression, to
children and fresh expressions and reaching city dwellers. If you want to
follow this month's theme why not consider the one on discipleship
(http://www.freshexpressions.org.uk/seminars#discipleship)? They are all
available from our online shop
(http://www.freshexpressions.org.uk/shop#FEPSP) and cost just £5 each.
Share
The weekly guest blog on Share continues to provoke discussion. Recent
entries include David Muir asking: 'Can pioneers water down the gospel?' and
Tom Brackett from the Episcopal Church in the USA asking advice from the
Church of England. The blog (http://www.sharetheguide.org/blog) is published
each Monday and you can leave your comments and join the discussion. Coming
soon: Fritha Washington from Hope08.
Are you part of a learning network, or do you want to join one? Head on over

would be happy to add your learning network to the list of those that exist,
or if you are interested in joining one contact Beth Keith

might we encourage discipleship?' It contains more than 30,000 words on the
important issue of discipleship in fresh expressions
(http://www.sharetheguide.org/discipleship).
Catching the eye of the media
Some fascinating coverage in the media recently. As well as interviews on
Premier Radio
(http://www.premierradio.org.uk/shows/sunday/theleadershipfile.aspx) and ABC
Australia (http://www.abc.net.au/sundaynights/stories/s2516732.htm) there
was a lengthy article in the Church Times about training pioneers and major
features on emerging church in Christianity magazine. Let us know if you
ever spot something in a newspaper or on the TV/radio about fresh
expressions so that we can build ou can leave your comments and join the
discussion. Coming soon: Fritha Washington from Hope08.

New website
Thank you to all those who took part in our online survey. The results were
fascinating and will really inform us as we build a new website over the
summer. Do get in touch if you have any particular thoughts about ways in
which the site should develop over the next year or so. On the site
(http://www.freshexpressions.org.uk) this month there's some engaging
material about fresh expressions for families with young children which is
well worth a read.
Fresh Expressions where you are...
Our next vision day (http://www.freshexpressions.org.uk/vision) is on the
18th of April in Crickhowell, Powys with another in Corfe Mullen, near
Wimborne on the 25th of April. If you would like to come along to either of
these days you would be more than welcome. Contact
vision@... for further details or if you would like us
to hold one in your area.
We are also going to be making appearances at the Newcastle Upon Tyne,
Wales, Southampton and Manchester & Stockport Methodist District Synods in
April and are launching mission shaped ministry
(http://www.freshexpressions.org.uk/missionshapedministry) in South Wales on
25th April.
We will be putting in an appearance too at ECG the Conference
(http://www.ecgevent.org.uk), at the Llandudno Conference Centre from the
14th to 19th of April. Please check their website for further details.
And finally.
May you experience the resurrection power of Jesus this Easter and, like the
disciples on the road to Emmaus, see the Lord with new eyes and in new
places.
