I posted an identical problem on here about 18 months ago. My '96 XRDT
has been
doing this since I bought it 3 years ago. It's a bit embarrasing when
it coughs
and smokes, but not a major problem as it's fine once it gets going. I
had a few
reponses saying "me too" and a few suggestions including glow plugs and air in
the fuel system. Air seemed to be getting into the fuel system as I could
squeeze the priming bulb a couple of times after leaving the car stopped
standing and this would ease or solve the starting problem. So I changed the
glow plugs, priming bulb, fuel filter gasket and checked all the hoses
- no air
leaks I could find by poking around. The problem was still happening.

I took my car in for a service a couple of days ago and after they changed the
fuel filter they couldn't get it going again - the stop solenoid has
immobilised itself (my car has a keypad immobiliser linked to the stop
solenoid), apparently this happens from time to time.

The solenoid was hidden behind an armoured cover on the RHS of the fuel pump.
The garage cut it out without removing the fuel pump, it cost me £90 labour +
£20 for a new solenoid. The car starts fine now, no puffing, shaking or
smoking. Possibly the solenoid was allowing air into the fuel system? Seems
possible. Needless to say I'm very pleased to have finally sorted this
(although £90 labour seems a bit steep!)

Regards
Rob

Try a bottle of diesel injector cleaner in your tank, works a treat... Do it few times, every couple of tank fills. If you haven't serviced it, air, fuel, oil...
