I vaguely remember my 306 was sometimes a little reluctant to engage first gear
sometime. I think I got into the habit of selecting the gear just before I came
to a stop rather than afterwards and this appeared to work ok.
 
Just learnt to live with it as a little quirk. Never got any worse and never had
any more problems with it
 
Should this happen again you might like to try: moving the gear lever to
neutral, releasing the clutch pedal, then pressing down the clutch pedal again
and then try selecting first. In my experience with other cars, this usually
allows you to select first gear.
 
Also, be sure you're pressing the clutch all the way to the floor.
