It could be that the bulb has gone. The bulb should stay lit (rather
than go out after a few seconds) if there is a fault with the
airbag. Of course it could be that there was a fault so someone
disabled the bulb to stop being reminded of it.

I suspect getting the airbag system checked out might cost a lot of
money. It's up to you whether you are content to be unsure whether
the airbag will work or not. I think it's unlikely that it will go
off by mistake.
