Hi A,
You don't mention the mileage whether it's high or low but then as it's an L
reg it's probably the same response regardless of mileage.
1) has the timing/cam belt been changed?
2) if so when was it changed, at what mileage?
3) is their a receipt for the work?
If the timing belt goes then so does the engine, it's always worth getting
it changed at the recommended interval if not before.
There isn't a lot else other than to listen to the engine for strange noises
(difficult if you're not used to the engine), also try and drive it and have
someone follow you (in another car of course) to check the exhaust for
smoking. A smoky exhaust cold mean the engine is worn, it could also mean
it needs a new air filter and the injectors and cylinders need a good clean
(a bit of injector cleaner for a few pounds would see that right, so the
owner should really have down that before selling it).
If you do drive it, and that's always recommended, then make sure you drive
it for a good ten or twenty minutes and get it warmed up, go through plenty
of gear changes, see how the gearbox and clutch feels of course but equally
importantly it'll show up any smokiness as you change gear. Make sure you
can get some place where you can accelerate the car (once it's warmed up)
again to check for smokiness at the exhaust, also try to listen for the
turbo if anything it should be a light whistling noise, no whistling noise
is not a problem however any other noises could mean trouble. If you do get
to a place to accelerate then at around 2000 - 3000 revs it should give you
a shove in the back and start to take off a bit, it should feel nice and
responsive. If it isn't then it could be anything from the fuel pump to the
turbo...
The rest is the general car stuff, brakes , clutch, gearbox, suspension, and
bodywork, look for accident damage by checking the panels and doors give
straight parallel lines where they meet. If it's nice and clean that's
always pleasing, but look inside at the carpets, pedal and seats for wear,
it's an indication of the type of wear the car has had so if it's supposed
to be low mileage there shouldn't be much wear on the pedal or seats if it's
high mileage then expect to see some wear or minor damage somewhere.
Note, high mileage (90,000 plus miles) on a diesel, turbo or otherwise,
shouldn't be problem if it's been regularly serviced. It's important the
oil and filters (oil, water, air) are regularly changed. The oil and oil
filter to reduce carbon, a blocked filter, reduced oil flow and wear in the
engine; the engine should go up past the 200,000 mile mark easily.
I've a 1999 XT/Cashmere turbo diesel, 109,000 miles on the engine, it's
regularly serviced, it's a fine car, no problems. I've recently driven a
friends 1996 Dturbo and it's even nicer, the trim is sportier the seats and
suspension a bit firmer. Regardless of it's age a good Peugeot 306 turbo
diesel is fairly easy to find and easy to keep that way, so don't be
pressurised into buying...
Good luck,
A

Subject: [Stuart's Peugeot 306 Club] 306 XRDT
Hi there all,
Im going to have a look at an L reg 306 XRDT tomorrow. I've seen some
pictures and it looks quite nice, it's going for a grand.
So, a couple of questions;
What do I need to look out for on one of these?
And does £1000 seem a good price?
Cheers,
A.
