Dear Friends,
I have received the following question from a member of the Dutch group, Harry Potter voor Zoekers: I would like to know the meaning of the symbolic number 13.
Answer:
Before answering that I'd like to say that I can't tell you what the "official" meaning is. I can only say what the symbolic number 13 means to me, personally.
Whenever I see the number 13 in fairy tales, legends etc. I always think of the 12 aeons, or the signs of the Zodiac. That's because every cosmos, no matter how great or small, has 12 concentrations of energy in its 'shell' or firmament. In this universe they are the 12 gaolers that keep us imprisoned in this dualistic world. But if there is a prison, there must also be liberation! Behind the 12 gaolers stand the 12 celestial stars of divine, liberating energy which will begin to shine again if we are prepared to die as to nature. When we have become exhausted in our struggle in dialectics, and our heart cries for a solution, it may happen that one of the original 12 lights begins to awaken, and to shine as a thirteenth star. We call this the Star of Bethlehem, or the bright morning star. In Harry Potter it is called Sirius, Harry's God-Father. It is the star of the resurrection, of the birth of a new, eternal life. It
signifies the awakening of a latent sun, which once, before the Fall, shone gloriously in our microcosm.
Hence the number 13 means to me the rebirth of the divine within us, Liberation, the journey home, and the ark that can take us there. This is why Pistis Sophia wants to enter the Thirteenth Aeon, to return to the Light of Lights.
In Harry Potter the number 13 is hidden in 9¾. If you divide 9¾ by ¾ the result is 13. Or we could say 9¾ is ¾ of 13. To board the magical train Harry has to get to Platform 9¾.
Because 13 represents a force from another universe it often makes superstitious people feel scared. Most people would rather choose the familiar, the known, than the unknown, which behaves according to totally different laws.
One example from the Bible.
Genesis 14:4 says: Twelve years they had served Chedor-Laómer, but in the thirteenth year they rebelled.
In his book The Brotherhood of Shamballa Jan van Rijckenborgh explains the Chedor-Laómer means "he who spreads the dull glimmer". That expression could also be translated as "spreads the shining darkness".
He continues:
As soon as the pupil realises that the dull glimmer is seeking to drive out his newly attained possession, he summons his fighting heroes. Abraham brings his three hundred and eighteen men into the battle against Chedor-Laómer. You will understand that this formula refers to the twelve heavenly forces which must lead to re-creation. The pupil on the path lives by virtue of these twelve new foods and when he consciously assimilates them the robe of the new life cannot possibly leave him.
We can learn from this that when our 12 years of servitude of the darkness are over, we can rebel in the thirteenth year and overcome the darkness.
Harry lives with his muggle relatives for 9¾ years until he receives the letter of invitation. This symbolises Harry rebelling in his thirteenth year op servitude.
May you all become rebels!
