What is your receiver? I'd suggest turning off the pre-amp(s) and even
adding or turning on some attenuation. The problem with modern rigs is
many of them are broadband. So, tons of noise gets into them. Especially
when one uses a pre-amp. Yaesu has IPO or Intercept Point Optimization,
which when active is actually turning off the pre-amp.
Using the MFJ antenna tuner is probably acting like an attenuator, just
what your receiver seems to need.
