Re: [50mhz The Magic Band] Gizmotchy 6M Beam?

Hi Again,

Generally, most 'serious' 6 stuff happens at the bottom end of the band so most antennas with focused atributes site around here. Your verticals and 2/3 elements beam may fenture outside of this for the FM and repeater guys but thee is nto too may of them around.

It is like all things, you don't get somethign for nothing and beams are no different. If you make it super wide-band, you end up with an antenna that is 'jack of all trades, master of none' basically not doing anythign very well.

for rban use, one of the attributes most attention should be paid to shold be the elevation plane pattern. IF this has very high and low lobes (which most do) you will cause interference more easily as well as pick up a lot of local man-made noise.

Subject: Re: [50mhz The Magic Band] Gizmotchy 6M Beam?

50.0-50.5 1:1 is neat but what about above that, please?

Is it the full-wave driven element entirely in the horizontal
plane that narrows the bandwidth?

How does this compare to a folded-dipole driven element
set horizontally or vertically?

There is lots of SSB DX from 50.5-51.2 and lots of FM activity
above that, would be cool to be able to get at that - perhaps
altering the length of the driven element (with switched
segments of tubing or something) at the feedpoint (rather
than out at the ends) to remotely tune it?

I think that these are two beams with radically different
design parameters - yours nails the gain and theirs seeks
to handle CW/SSB horizontal and FM vertical across the
entire band with less gain and probably a less clean pattern.

WDYT?

Justin, Pretty decent work! Approx gain/fb 5 el/6 m boom? Did you, by chance, ever try using a folded dipole as a driven element? Please give details so I can...
