Re: [The Obsessively Clean Den] hello out there!!!!!

Hi Sam :0)
How you doing today?
I have a Westie - Wesley, we've been out in the Garden all day today :0) He
likes to help me with the weeding by sticking his head right where I need to
dig!! lol.
My OCD began when I was about 14 and I would have to touch things again and
again because a voice in my head told me it was to avoid bad stuff
happening. I was then almost free from it for quite a while until I was
about 20. I was a Graphic Designer and used to work with chemicals which I
hated, I became increasingly scared of them to the point of feeling
physically sick if I had to go near them. I suffered a trauma at this time
also which I think triggered the OCD off in a more serious form. I would
never feel I was clean enough from these chemicals even after showering for
hours on end and constantly needed to wash my hands. I became more and more
Obsessed with these fears until I had to give up my job. That didn't stop
the OCD though! It took over my life completely and I was now scared of
anything or anybody that had in any way big or small any connection with
where I had worked. I avoided places, people, things you name it I avoided
it. If I thought I had come into contact with one of these things I would
wash clothes, hair skin, everything, this went on for about a year. At the
age of 26 I married my boyfriend and the OCD continued to wreak havoc,
taking over both our lives. If we went anywhere and I thought we went near
something I felt was contaminated we would have to wash and shower
everything when we got home, this became so unbearable with us having rows
about it so in the end we never went anywhere! I was almost a recluse,
living in one room and sleeping on a camp bed!
This went on for about 10 years until I sought help from a friend and I went
to see a Dr who referred me to a Psychiatrist and Psychologist. Now 5 years
on, separated from my husband, I'm living with my Dog and Cat and can do so
many things I never thought possible! but I am not free from the illness, I
don't think I ever will be, but I am happy to have this far!
Take one day at a time hon!
hugs Sani
