I remember starting on number 2 reeds (a Van Doren) many years ago - I've
never come across a number 1 reed - it must be amazingly thin / soft. Could
this be the problem? Equally I've never come across a Xaphoon so I claim no
expertise for your case. Certainly I start all my students (now that I teach)
on 2's. That's a quick and relatively easy experiment. A more expensive
solution but with other attractions would be to find yourself a local teacher
who will make sure that you are doing everything right at the start - much
easier than putting it right later on.
