Bruce,

I think you have a point here. Especially at higher zoom levels, the
"hot spot indicator" can be mistaken for a "Not Connected" pin or a
"Cross" shape pin.
I did some experimenting and found that a small square (the same size as
the "hot spot" cross) looks and feels very pleasant.
A small circle is also looking good, but this can be mistaken for a
"Dot" shape pin.

Don, what do you think of this as the inventor of the pin "hot spot"
indicator?

/Mark

Have you tried the 'Switches' library which comes with TinyCAD or the
'Industrial' libraries available in the [Files\Libraries] section on this page.
If none of these has what you want, use them as examples and make some yourself
- it is really quite easy with a bit of practice.
{see message #1207 for avoiding some pitfalls)

I agree with Bruce, and I like Mark's suggestion to make it a small square.

Either would be fine by me, but if a circle can be mistaken for a "Dot"
shaped pin, then it seems that the square would be a better way to go.
I hope for a symbol that cannot be mistaken for any other and that
somehow suggests "make a connection here!". This latter desire led me
to think of a "target" symbol.

Great work guys! I'm using TinyCad most every day now! The
improvements have made TinyCad an even greater pleasure to use.

Subject: Problem Generating SPICE netlist
aryajur
Send Email Send Email

Hello,
I am trying to generate SPICE netlist. But the problem is the output
netlist only contains 1 line even when I have 2 components which should generate
the SPICE netlist. The 2 elements in this simple case are defined by the
following code for netlist generation:

$(NetRef) %(1) %(2) $(NAME)?(not_empty(TC1), $(TC1),)?(not_empty(TC2), $(TC2),)
\$?(not_empty(sym), sym=$(sym),)

and

$(NetRef) %(1) %(2) $(NAME)?(not_empty(AC magnitude), AC=$(AC
magnitude)?(not_empty(AC Phase),\,$(AC Phase),\,0),) \$?(not_empty(sym),
sym=$(sym),)

The problem is caused I think by the \$ statement. I need to add this to add
comment for the component. If this is not there then it works otherwise not.

Please let me know if there is any way around this.

Thanks.

Hi Milind -

A quick look through the source indicates that this is likely a bug, but not a
simple one to fix. Please submit the details that you have written below to the
TinyCAD bug tracker so that this can be addressed in the next release. In the
meantime, I suggest that instead of outputting the dollar sign ($), try
outputting some other character that is never used in your netlist. Then, after
generating your netlist normally, text edit it and replace all occurrences of
the workaround character with a $ character.

Sorry, I know that this workaround sucks, but it is the best that I can do at
the moment.

Best regards,

Don

This is a crashing bug wherein the New Symbol editor crashes when an old symbol
is selected. I notice that this bug has been closed as fixed in the bug tracker
but the fix has not made it into the download package. I ran into it and
fiddled around to find a work around. The steps are a follows:

1. Find the symbol in one of the libraries which contains the symbol that most
closely matches the new symbol you want to create. Suppose it is named S1.

2. Using the "Library:Libraries" Menu Item, Select and Edit the library which
contains the symbol.

3. Select symbol S1 (the one in step 1 above) by clicking on it.

4. Right click and select " edit symbol ".

5. Select all of the symbol components by dragging a selection rectangle around
all the components.

6. Copy the symbol components into the copy buffer (i.e. type CTRL-C)

7. Close the symbol and library.

8. Using the Library:Libraries Menu Item, Edit the library where you want the
new symbol to reside.

8. Select the first symbol in the new library (click on it.)

9. Right Click and select the "New Symbol" menu item. A new symbol editor
window will open.

10. Paste the content of the copy buffer into the new symbol editor.

11. Continue making the edits for your new symbol using the components of the
copied symbol.

It is slightly tedious, but it works.

Have a look at GenLogic.mdb in Files/Libraries
Took about 30mins to make - accuracy not guaranteed.

Subject: TinyCAD 2.70.00 Build 228 Beta Release is now available!
donlucas51
Send Email Send Email

The long awaited beta release of 2.70.00 is now available at build 228. This
version is improved over the alpha version of 2.70.00 in the following ways:

1. It fixes all hierarchical netlist outputs (still one problem with the parts
list that wasn't fixed in time for this release, but will be re-released soon).

2. Adds missing and new shortcut keys to frequently used commands.

3. Improves the look of icons.

4. Supports both SQLite3 and Microsoft Access/Jet database libraries (your
choice, at least for this beta).

5. Fixes all documented problems with creating new reference designator
assignments.

6. Improves Spice netlist functionality with new conditional macros.

7. Adds the ability to make parameters appear or be hidden depending on whether
a value has been assigned to them.

8. Adds the ability to display parameters in the form of "parameter=value" on
the schematic so that they are more self explanatory.

9. Has increased zoom levels and improved zooming capabilities.

10. Has an improved and less intrusive "hot spot" indicator on pins.

11. Adds the ability to select only fully enclosed or touching objects in the
selection rectangle marquee, depending on whether you select from right to left
(only fully enclosed) or from left to right (anything that is touching or
enclosed).

12. Increased levels of stability.

13. Probably a few others that I've forgotten about (but all changes are
documented in the SVN commit logs).

Please give this new version a try and let me know what you think. Please be
aware that symbol libraries are now supported in two different formats and it is
your obligation to choose when creating a new library what format you want it to
be in. If you choose the new SQLite3 format library, the only way to go back to
the Access/Jet library format is to export the library in XML format, and then
create a new library in the desired format and read it back in.

Also, please be careful to only install TinyCAD while using an administrator
account (or Microsoft Access format libraries will most likely fail). There
presently is no check for compliance during installation.

I am personally using this beta at work with excellent results. There is very
little risk of crashing behavior or otherwise losing your work. I consider the
production 2.60 release to actually be considerably less stable, at this point.

As soon as we get a thousand or so installs with no serious problems reported, I
will release this as a full production release. Note that we get between 100
and 200 installs of TinyCAD per day, presently, but most of these are for the
2.60 production release.

Best regards,

Don

After install all runs well no apparent problems however after I exit TinCad
then restart it I get an error message for each of the liberaries to the effect
that either I do not have access permission or that they are being used by

I have gone back to 1.6 but to do so I had to do a full uninstall of 2.7

Hi Tony -

We are not really supporting Vista yet, but you can probably work around this
problem. Vista handles security on files contained in the Program Files
directory differently than XP. Try moving the entire directory named c:\Program
Files\TinyCAD\library to somewhere else that is more appropriate for Vista such
as My Documents. You will have to unload the libraries from TinyCAD, move the
directory, and then reload the libraries.

Also, just in case you missed the warning, you must install TinyCAD with an
administrator account, or the libaries may not work properly.

Best regards,

Don

I had this problem too with Vista.  The way I got around it was to change the permissions on the C drive and on the programs directory - I believe I changed the properties for both. It works fine after that.

A big thanks to Don and all the others for the great effort in updating TinyCAD!

Actually, the right way to solve this is to put the libraries in a directory
with the correct permissions rather than opening up the program files directory
to any program that cares to write over it. My copy of Vista has a programdata
directory (notice the lack of a space, that shows microsoft *can* learn from
their mistakes).

I have several programs installed which appropriately put read/write files under
the user directory or the programdata directory. Can TinyCAD use the correct
folder for the library and other data files?

Thank you very much for all the work that went into this! It looks
great, and I'll give it a work out.

There still is a crash-causing bug in 2.7.0, the same as in 2.6:
When you try to repeat insertion of another design as a (hierarchial) symbol and
change the design file while still inside the command, the system crashes.

Hi Mike -

Thanks for your info. Do you mind writing this bug up in the bug tracker on
SourceForge? Please add specific steps to follow so that it is repeatable and I
will work on solving it.

Thanks,

Don Lucas

Hi, Everyone:

I just thought I'd let those who are interested know that I have gotten TinyCAD
27.00.00 Beta to work under UBUNTU Linux and WINE.

The first thing that needs to be done is to run TinyCAD under Windows XP. Click
on the Libraries tab. Select a library and then click on the Update button.
You will need to do this with each library. I could not get it to select
globally.

After all the libraries are updated, you will need to copy the libraries folder
to the proper location in the WINE system. I used a flash drive to transfer it
because it was located on a different computer than where Windows XP is.

In the UBUNTU system, access the flash drive with the saved TinyCAD libraries
folder, right-click on the libraries folder and select COPY.

Click on Applications in the upper left of the UBUNTU desktop, click on WINE and
select Browse the C drive. Double-click on Programs, then double-click TinyCAD.
Right-click on the Library folder and select Send to Trash. Once that is done,
right-click and select Paste. There should now be the library folder that was
copied from XP visible.

You should now be able to run TinyCAD and get the symbol libraries to show up.

I just got this to work very recently and I have no idea if there are any other
issues. I have no ongoing projects, so I have not been able to test other
functions, but at least now the symbol libraries should work.

Regards,

Don - N9ZXS

Don,

Thanks for the hard work on this latest release. There are a lot of
great improvements!

whether a value has been assigned to them.

I like this, but its not clear how the "ability" works. Suddenly my old
drawings are littered with "other=some label". How does TinyCad
determine whether or not to display the parameter or not? Some parameter
titles are displayed, others are not, and it seems somewhat arbitrary.
Neither have I been able to figure out when parameters display when a
value is assigned. More detail would be helpful.

I like and don't like this new "hot spot". For some reason it makes some
parts look like they are not connected at certain zoom levels. Perhaps
it has to do with the color combinations of the light color hot-spot
square crossing the darker wire. It is a bit disconcerting at times and
I find myself double-checking connections.

Thanks,
Alan

From the library editor, right click on a symbol and select "Symbol Properties".
You will note that the column named "Display Method" now has some additional
possibilities. The following choices are available:

1. Show Value
2. Hide Value
3. Never Show
4. Show Name: Value
5. Show Name: Value when present

I originally used "Name: Value" instead of "Name=Value" so I do need to update
the dialog choices to be more consistent.

If you select "Name: Value", you will always see the name of the parameter, an
equals sign, and then the value of the parameter, whether it has one or not.

If you select "Name: Value when present", you will see the name of the
parameter, an equals sign, and then the value of the parameter only when the
parameter contains a value. If the parameter does not contain a value, then
nothing will display.

Note that when adding a new parameter, as usual, the name defaults to "Other"
and the value defaults to "..". The Display Method defaults to "Show Value".
This should produce the simple text string ".." when you place the symbol. The
name "Other" will not display.

Caveats:
1. Once a symbol has been placed, while you can change the visibility of the
symbol, the full range of choices is not present. Visibility changes are
limited to only "Yes" or "No" at this point. This was partially a
misunderstanding on my part and partially an oversite on my part. I plan to
permit the full range of Display Methods in the next release of 2.70.00.

2. If you modify a symbol in the library and then update it on a schematic, the
changes in visibility will propagate forward appropriately for all parameters
except the reference parameter (which needs a little more work).

3. Once you have overridden a parameter's visibility from within the
schematic's limited editor, it cannot be restored to one of the newer visibility
types except via an update or a delete and then a replace (will be fixed in the
next release).

4. There is a possible update problem with SQLite3 libraries as opposed to
Access libraries. Which library format are you using?

If you have a bunch of parameters showing up with the Name=Value format on
already existing schematics, please send a sample schematic to me for analysis.
Those display types didn't exist previously and thus you shouldn't be seeing
this.

Do you have any suggestions on ways to improve this feature? New users will
reap considerable benefits from this feature, so I am reluctant to delete it,
but I am very open to improving it, including possibly not even displaying it
when in the schematic editor (as opposed to the symbol editor).

Thanks for the feedback -

Don
