Wearing my 'dressy' sandals to work today.
I've been wanting to do it for about 2 months or so now, but have never
had a chance. First I was trying to find a pair of closed toe
fisherman's that I liked, and that was purely an exercise in
frustration. Then I thought I'd wear what I have (which are open toe)
on a friday (casual day), but every friday in August was either cool or
rainy.
Saw one of the programmers wear some decent tan open toe's for a while.
It got a little cool and he stopped. I thought for sure he'd have 'm on
today, but of course not. Even one of the girls in accounting who's
worn sandals all summer doesn't. So I'm the asshole. lol Must be
something to do with that superstition (stupid-stition) about Labor Day.
At anyrate, nobody seemed to say anything to the programmer (older guy,
PhD, in his late 40s), so I thought I could manage it too. The trick
is, he's tucked away in an office all day, and I'm the IT dept. (all of
it) so I have to move around the building, including in the CEOs office
quite a bit.
So far, I think only 3 people have seen me in them. 1, a guy, pretended
not to notice. Another, the secretary, didn't seem to care in the
least. And the third, probably the best looking old lady here, didn't
seem to care for it much. Either she was just surprised and I mis-read,
or she thought it didn't look so hot. Not sure. Who knows. lol
But at least there've been no "WTF?" looks or looks of disgust. lol
All through the warmer months I've been seeing many of the women
wearing sandals. As the summer progressed, more and more got into it.
Then they started wearing flipflops (and not even particularly dressy
ones) on fridays. Then I saw 2 of them wearing FFs during the week a
few times.
On the one hand, I wear sandals because I love the look and enjoy being
different - but always with an eye to catching female attention and
hopefully being able to strike up a conversation. So it's not really
a "work thing". On the other hand, as I've gotten into wearing them so
much, when it's warm out and I'm in shoes and socks, I feel like I'm
suffocating my feet. So I'm kinda torn about whether I'll continue or
not.
Maybe if I can find a nice pair of closed toe next year, that might be
a nice split/balance. But I do think that we should have the option.
Partly because women do it so much, even though I know the rules are
always different for them. But also because there's a lot of health
benefits to it and it can look good if done right. One problem is that
we are limited in styles to choose from because it's still not common
(or even commonly accepted).
Yes, I know this isn't about rings or jewelry (I'm not wearing my ring
today, and I didn't even touch up the buff job on my nails), but this
place seems to have fallen off again - and it is somewhat sorta
related. :p
