THE PEASANTS REVOLT ONCE MORE
22 June 2004
A major event in Canterbury's history will be celebrated this Friday
(25 June) when a television documentary about the Peasant's Revolt
of 1381 is filmed in the city.
The programme, presented by Tony Robinson for Channel 4, traces the
course of the Peasant's Revolt from its starting point in Brentwood,
Essex, through Maidstone to Canterbury and finally to Smithfield in
London where the revolt reached its conclusion.
It will feature interviewees telling the story and the political,
social and cultural background to the revolt, intercut with footage
of the rebels riding to London.
Filming will take place at the cathedral and in the city centre, and
will then follow five horses and riders on a route out of Canterbury
similar to that which the peasants would have taken all those years
ago.
The city council has worked closely with the producers of the
programme, Spire Films Ltd, to ensure the filming goes smoothly. In
addition to the standard film crew, the owners and trainers of the
horses, from a specialist company who provide 'film horses', will
accompany the filming.
Deputy Leader of Canterbury City Council, Cllr Ron Pepper, said: "We
are always keen to help with filming requests like these, because
they provide invaluable free publicity for Canterbury. We will be
delighted to welcome the film crew and horses to the city.
"This filming has the added benefit of celebrating a major event in
local history and reminding us of the part many Canterbury citizens
played in this important rebellion."
