Hello Cally and all...

I received the good news about "several updates to the website", but I can't
find a link to Tony's site anywhere at this Yahoo! Group. Am I looking in the
wrong place?

Could you please post a link to Tony's site under the "Links" category along the
left-hand margin of this page?

There is one link under that category, however it doesn't lead to a website
dedicated to Tony.

(Hope I'm not showing my age and my computer illiteracy!)

With appreciation,
Bob

I don't know if this has already been posted, but Tony is supporting the

It's part of the build-up to World Alzheimer's Day (September 21st) and ART are

I remember Tony doing a series of schools programmes in the 80s about the
history of a town (any town!). It used very basic computer graphics to show how
a town would develop from Roman times, through Anglo Saxon, Tudor etc and up to
the present day. Can anyone remember what the series was called? I video taped
them but must have lost them in one of my many house moves. My grandchildren
would be interested in them now.

A friend of mine is trying to find an agent/publisher for a humorous play/book
he has written based on the above tour that never was!! It is actually based on
a true story about a lowly local Bristol amateur side who organised a tour to
the above and somehow got mistaken for the mighty Bristol City.

Just wondered if anyone might have a way of contacting Tony to see if he could
help point my friend in the right direction with the book.
If nothing else, it is a damn good yarn that may be of some amusement to Tony as
an avid City fan!!

Thanks.

Roman Remains ( a decorated coffin and artefacts etc) were found in
1887 at a site in Plumstead which is under threat of being developed.
Some local historians believe it is possible there may be a Roman
Burial Ground at or near the site. The site is part of MOL (Plumstead
Common). Do you have any information/interest in this site?

Tony has a long professional association with the Theatre Royal
Bristol which is currently closed thanks to its disastrous
mismanagement in so many ways by its last executives. This theatre
is the oldest in Britain. Given Tony's long association with it and
his own interest in it, I think there's an opportunity now to do a
"Time Team" on it! I know there's loads of history there which is yet
to be discovered, especially since I discovered that standing on the
stage front at the New Globe in Southwark places performers in exactly
the same relationship with the audience they have when standing on the
original stage front at the Theatre Royal Bristol. (The stage front at
Bristol stood where the third row of stall seats now stand. One has to
stand on the arms of these seats to see the relationship 18th century
performers had with their audience when Bristol first opened.)

Does anyone know how can i get in touch with him to suggest this? I
am about to publish the first scholarly article on the Theatre Royal
Bristol's history since the death of my associate Dr. Kathleen Barker,
the theatre's official historian. Theatre historians have long
believed that the original 18th century auditorium was seriously
altered c.1800 and that little of the 1766 interior survives. This is
complete nonsense, as I believe I can prove. I have made some
reconstruction drawings showing how the building looked when it opened
in 1766 and believe that the original auditorium survives entirely
intact. It was designed by David Garrick's carpenter, James Saunders.
Even the plaque outside wrongly describes "Thomas Paty" as the
"architect". In fact, in 1766 the word "architect" didn't always mean
"designer". It also meant "designer of interior plasterwork" which
was very common in the 18th century. The word "Architect" with a
capital A, did not become common till the late 19th century when
legislation associated with fire prevention ensured that this
profession became the "official" people who planned and designed
buildings. This took away the professional status of carpenters and
masons, reducing them to labourers. Hence the common belief
"Architects can't design buildings cos they don't build them!" and
"Builders spend most of their time correcting the mistakes made by
the Architects".

Great website - you're obviously a big fan!

I hope you don't mind me asking, but I'm involved with a charitable
organisation for teenagers (Inner Flame), and we're planning an event
in June which we'd love someone like Tony (is there anyone like him :-
)) to come and launch for us. It involves climbing up a 9 metre pole
and attempting to break a record...

I know Tony has supported a variety of charities in the past,
including some youth charities, and the event is just South of
Cirencester, so not too far away.

The question is, how should I contact him to make the request. Any
ideas?

Many thanks

David

This is going to sound a little odd, but after watching "Ghosts of
Glastonbury" I felt compelled to suggest that the word that came
through during the automatic writing session may not have been
"emmanuel" or "emanuel" meaning "God with us". Instead, and only in my
own opinion of course, it appeared to say "emanuensis" (also spelt
"emmanuensis", "ammanuensis" and more commonly, "amanuensis") meaning
"a scribe, one who takes dictation or writes on behalf of another".

Just a thought, and one that Tony may find interesting if someone here
could pass the message along.

I can't help you with Odysseus! sorry! But I was born and raised here
in the United States of America, I've had the pleasure of watching Tony
and Rowen through several seasons of The Black adder, and a couple
seasons of Time Team! I am a big fan of Time Team and can't seem to
understand why its not airing in the states!!! Most Haunted aires here,
it may be 1/2 to a whole season behind, but it aires here! Archaeology
and Metal Detecting are huge in the states, I am an avid Metal
Detectorist and have my own club called DUH-TEKTORS of NWI with its own
web site. I can't see why Channel 4 in GB does not try to find a deal
with at least the History channel to air back programs of Time Team! I
would like a reason why thats not happening? They are doing some great
work and discoveries for GB and we are not able to see it! Time Team is
a Great Show and all should be able to see it! sorry Tim for the rant
on your thread, it just came out because you mentioned being here in
the states for 2 years and not seeing Time Team! Edward Schuhrke

Mr. Robinson, first let me say that I do enjoy both  your comedy
and your documentary works.  I was recently given a copy of your
documentary about The DaVinci Code and found it very informative. As
I have not read the book, nor seen the movie.  It did seem to draw
heavily on the theories put out by the authors of  'The Holy Blood
and the Holy Grail' which I read in the mid 80s.  It is an
interesting theory.
In your documentary  on the grail legend you did comment on the Last
Supper painting and how the Disciple sitting next to Christ seems
too female to be John.  I would have to agree.  Why anyone would
think that this figure was John I would not know, One only has to look
at her clothing to identify her as female compared to the other dinner
guests, also,  in the gospel of Thomas (I think, as I am to lazy to
google atm.) it states that Magdalene was at the last supper, and she
was asked by Peter to ask Jesus who was the disciple who would
betray him as she leaned back upon him.  (In the painting, Mr DaVinci
has painted them sitting on chairs around a table, which, although being
correct for Mr. DaVinci's time, was not for Christ.) In Christ's time
they would all be lounging on benches.
You may be interested in this site, which I have to say puts forward
a very compelling argument regarding Mary Magdalene's part in
the life of Christ.

What sort of things were say at the Who do you think you are event? Did
Tony say anything about tracing his family tree, I've had an email
request about what if anything was said about his family, so I'd
thought I'd ask someone who was actually there.

Any info gratefully received, or if you liked to do a review of the
event I'd love to put it on the website, if you were happy for me to do
so. :-)

Hi ya Cally...

I would be honored to send you a DVD of Tony Robinson's WWOD. The DVD
is not restricted to any particular region of the world (and not
copy-protected in any way). In the past, I have traded DVDs with folks
in England and Wales, so I don't believe you'll have difficulty
watching it or sharing it.

As I mentioned in my post, you could share the programme with other TR
fans in the British Isles (including TR himself) as I would likely go
broke with the cost of international postage. (I have been sharing the
DVD with other fans in the States.)

I will need a full postal address, whether at home or at work or a
friends. You may send that information directly to my personal email
address to avoid publishing it at the Yahoo! Group.

Cheers,
Bob Bell
