Hi Andy,
I would say the size of the coil & its location up the mast are open to
experiment & perhaps a case of " suck it & see " .

I've had my own helical coil atop a 40' mast & found it favoured DX & Long Haul,
over shorter conditions.

I've also tried with a Helical Coil at the base of the mast & the rest of the
antenna in an " Inverted L " style & found that worked better for " Inter G " .

If you look at some of the pics in the photo section of this site, you may get
an idea of the spacing that I use ( size of a pencil ) & of course, the length
of the former depends on how much wire is going on it, space used & diameter.

On a personal note, I have used 2 inch formers with a good degree of success.
I would not want to use anything less than a 1 & half inch former.

Hope this helps & let us know your progress.

Regards,
Phil. M0VEY .
