2E0GMW HELICALLY WOUND 160M ADD ON COIL FOR HIGH SIERRA SIDEKICK   Message List
Reply | Forward Message #95 of 141 |
Hi All,
I've just added some photos of a 160m add on coil for the High Sierra
Sidekick mobile antenna. Simon - 2E0GMW made this coil a few weeks ago & has
had great success in operating mobile on 160m with this homebrew coil added to
the sidekick antenna.

I recently worked Simon myself on 160m while he was on holiday in Cornwall.
This was a distance of over 300 miles from my location in East Yorkshire & no
mean feat given that Simon was TXing slightly inland.

There will be more detals & pics of this coil posted shortly. this antenna is
work in progress & experiments with different whip lengths are ongoing.

Basically, the coil has been made using the coil former from an old cb antenna.
This coil had a 3/8 threaded base & provision for a whip antenna in the top.

Simon wound approximately 17m of 1.25mm enamelled copper wire, tightly on the
former. This was then covered with self amalgamating tape for a weatherproof
seal. Heatshrink could also be used. The whip currently used is about 6 feet
tall.

Simon also uses a small capacity hat that sits above the original coil on the
Sidekick & below the new add on coil. This can be seen in the photos section.

Regards to all group members.
