Welcome to the first Transition Town Westcliff Newsletter - we will try to send it to you once a month but please be patient with us:).

In addition to the newsletter we plan to send one news bulletin monthly with the choice of videos, articles and interviews to read from and get armed in information on peak oil, climate change and practical solutions from within the Transition Initiatives and other active groups.

What is it about...

Just a refresher: we work towards Westcliff on Sea which sources as much food as possible locally, with local energy production and transport which won't collapse of oil shortage and won't aggravate the climate change, with buildings made from local materials which don't need that much heating and which are designed to create pleasant, thriving neighborhoods... To Be Continued...

History so far...

Much work has been done since we formed the steering group (Step 1 of Transition), started awareness raising (Step 2) and networking (Step 3). Still 9 Steps to go go before we reach the stage of making our own Energy Descent Action Plan which will reduce our oil addiction and reduce the impact of climate disruption.

Below you can find more details on those exciting and busy months of meetings, talks, screenings, press inquiries, learning and insights which move us towards a more resilient Westcliff on Sea and area. Until now the meetings were very enlightening and we made many valuable contacts with individuals and groups and are looking forward to meeting even more of people of Westcliff.

Oh and thanks for coming:)
Future...
Visit us on at the Open Day at Springfield Allotments 3rd of August 14:00 till 17:00.

And soon we will do some film screenings and more workshops so keep an eye on the website for future events.

Your suggestions on events, people and organizations we could approach are Welcome. Thank you from the team to all who are staying informed and who pass the news about us to others - this greatly accelerates our work and makes it easier to progress through the Transition 12 Steps.

Transition Towns...

Somerset County Council voted unanimously to endorse a motion that they become the UK's first 'Transition Local Authority'
and I'm sure Southend Borough Council and Essex Council are just steps away too... I can dream can't I?

*WOOD ENERGY FOR A LOW CARBON FUTURE*

17th July 2008

7.30 onwards
at
Scarlett Fireplaces
164 London Road
Southend on Sea

*ABOUT THIS EVENING*

A presentation and discussion led by Jason Scarlett exploring how we can
ensure future fuel resilience for Westcliff on Sea.

Current energy and environmental issues are on all our minds. With gas
and oil prices rising and stocks depleting the mention of renewable
energy is no longer just the concern of the green ones among us. One
answer lies wood fuel derived from the sustainable management
(coppicing) and replanting of our local indigenous woodlands.
Wood burning can be eased into modern lifestyles as part of a real and
necessary carbon neutral alternative to fossil fuels. Heating your home
with logs can mean that your energy bill incurs no standing charge and
is paid directly to the local forest industry that manage our woodland,
street and garden trees. In turn, local councils, farmers and land
owners see tree planting more favourably.

Free admission, however due to limited space booking is essential,
please email info@... or ring 01702 335054 to ensure
your place!

*ABOUT TRANSITION TOWN WESTCLIFF*

*Transition Town Westcliff* is an exploration of how the people of
Westcliff on Sea and the surrounding area can prepare for a carbon
constrained, energy lean world. TTW is a community-led initiative which
is working towards the creation of an Energy Descent Action Plan
<http://transitiontowns.org/Totnes/Main/WhatIsAnEnergyDescentPlan?> for
the town. The thinking behind TTW is simply that a town using much less
energy and resources than we presently consume could, if properly
planned for and designed, be more resilient, more abundant and more
pleasurable than the present.

SOME BACKGROUND - PEAK OIL AND CLIMATE CHANGE

Cheap oil has made possible much of what we take for granted. However
many experts now agree that world oil production is reaching its peak
and that the age of cheap oil is drawing to a close, a phenomenon known
as ‘peak oil’. Oil and Gas Journal reports that;

* For every 6 barrels of oil we consume, we are only discovering one
new one.
* Nearly all the world’s large oilfields are in decline
* World oil production reached its all time high in 2004, and has
declined since
* It takes 10 calories of oil to put 1 calorie of food on our table

From scientists to economists, activists to businessmen, politicians to
campaigners, there is now universal consensus that Climate Change is
perhaps the single greatest environmental challenge in our history.

* Our world is hotter than it has been in two thousand years. All ten
of the hottest years on record have occurred since 1990
* Already 150,000 people die each year as a result of climate change
and the problem is getting worse. Floods in Mozambique, forest
fires in
Indonesia, hurricanes in Florida, storms in the UK – these are all
exacerbated by climate change

LIFE BEYOND OIL - THREAT OR OPPORTUNITY

Climate Change and Peak Oil can cause us to feel confronted by something
overwhelmingly huge that we cannot do anything about. The central
message of the Transition Movement is that this state of mind is not the
place to start from if we want to achieve something, do something or
create something. Indeed, by shifting our mind-set we can actually
recognise the coming post-cheap oil era as an opportunity rather than a
threat, and design the future low carbon age to be thriving, resilient
and abundant – somewhere much better to live than our current alienated
consumer culture based on greed, war and the myth of perpetual growth.

SOME QUESTIONS TO CONSIDER

* What would a low energy society look like?
* How would Westcliff house and power itself?
* How will we meet our food and health needs?
* What will our transport look like?
* Where will business and economics fit in?
* What about education, arts and culture?

If these issues concern you and you would like to find out more about
how communities can respond and plan proactively and positively for the
future, please come along to our forthcoming meetings, events and
presentations.

Didn't look at the links provided but the general tone of the homepage
seemed quite apocalyptic with a "we're all doomed, Captain Mainwaring!"
tone, which probably isn't all that helpful...

However events of the last few weeks have shown that food security is
certainly coming onto the global and even national agenda, and will
become even more of an issue if Peak Oil becomes a reality.

Its something we are thinking about as Transition Town Westcliff, in
fact we held our first 'Open Space' event around the question of 'How
will Westcliff feed itself when the oil runs out?"

Perhaps if we start addressing these issues now rather than later we can
design some kind of locally based (food feet, not food miles!) solution
that might just avoid the 'Mad Max' style scenarios of the doom-mongers???

Cheers Graham

These paintings have been inspired by, and are interpretations of,
St Lawrences' orchard in Eastwoodbury Lane.

Originally planted during the 1920's, and neglected for many years,
this orchard is currently being restored and revitalised by Growing

St Lawrences' orchard is a reminder of more resilient times for the
Southend area, a tiny fragment left over from a time when much of
the land surrounding the town was covered by acres and acres of
orchards and small holdings, before we became totally reliant upon
supermarkets, imported food and fossil fuels to feed ourselves.

The partnership of Scarlett Fireplaces, Spiralseed and Transition

Hi,
Im getting a little up-set by the constant re-branding
of the Palace Theatre Westcliff (yes Westcliff) . The
Palace Theatre sits in the heart of Westcliff and not
Southend,so why do the new leaseholders keep trying to
move it to Southend. In all new adds and flyer for the
Palace Theatre Westcliff it seems to have moved to
Southend.I hope this is a mistake on the part of
Southend Theatres and not a attempt to rip the heart
out of Westcliff! It has a new website with Southend in
the title surly this can only lead to confusion with
visitors old and new looking for a new Theatre in
Southend (Or is it me that is confused do we have a new
theatre?).

The Palace Theatre Westcliff has been in Westcliff form
the day the first brick was laid and I feel it is
un-fair of the new leaseholders to try and take away
our history by the constant use of Southend instead of
Westcliff. The Palace Theatre (The Old Lady Of
Westcliff) has been a part of westcliff since 1912 and
is the pride of Westcliff,so hands off!

I think it's time for the good folks of Westcliff to
take the matter up with the HQ Theatres the
leaseholders " mike@..."

Ok end of moan
Chris...

Here are some photos from a project I've been working on with
transition Town Brixton, promoting localised food growing on the

Resilient and Abundant - Welcome to Transition Westcliff!

Spread the word and invite people who might be interested. The more of us the better:)

the text which will be automatically sent to all new members of the
yahoo group. Feel free to edit and give suggestions for the final version.
I'd like to keep it short and concise as people don't like to read
long rules:

"The Transition Westcliff Yahoo Group makes it easy to exchange ideas.

Just send an email to:

transitionwestcliff@...

and all the group members will receive it.

Share your ideas to spark of others!!!

1)Be polite, we all share a common vision.
2)Be concise and use bullet points if presenting ideas.

If you are receiving too many emails
1) change your settings on the www.yahoo.com groups page to receive a
Daily Digest - with the emails of that day in one email
2) if you are having difficulties ask the moderator
kamil.pachalko@... to do it for you:)

Share your ideas to spark of others!!!
