Re: [Tropical Aquaria] HELLO !

well it's a start. one thing you are going to notice around here is the fact
that you are going to be getting a plethora of info from many sources that seem
to be in conflict with each other, and hey! that's ok. simply because many have
raised the same fish, it does not mean that the fish are all going to act
accordingly. that's the beauty of this hobby, it's never the same with anybody
and it keeps us on our toes! now that being said, on with a little more of this.
you want to keep your convicts separate, right?
I don't recall in any of your letters, your tank size, but if it's large enough,
I can make a couple of suggestions. you could try a central american biotope
consisting of fish that would come from that area. unfortunately, convicts tend
to take over the whole tank no matter how big it is. have you ever considered
trading them in for a pair of firemouths? they tend to be a little more mellow,
thus making it a little more flexible as far as tank mates are concerned. from
there, you could try adding some top swimmers from that area, try some sword
tails.. they look similar to mollies, and they grow to a nice size as well..
most cichlids tend to stay near the bottom while the sword tails hang around the
top. it makes for a nice balance - you could try it with your convicts, but I
wouldn't be certain if the swordtails would survive. also, have you considered
adding a few more convicts? the larger population would help diffuse agression -
they would be too busy figuring out who to pick on, that there would be far
fewer injuries! now on to the pleco - I like the cucmber idea, however, try some
zucchini (courgette)..it's packed with a plethora of vitamins and minerals and
all that other wholesome good stuff that most vegetarian fish would totally dig!
you can certainly make that other tank an asian tank. you are halfway there!
obviously, the odd man out would be the unfortunate angel fish with the long
yummy tempting fins. in either setup, I would be hard pressed to figure out
where the angel fish would fit into the scheme of things. most hobbyists
normally put them in the "species" tanks, simply because angels are tricky like
that. they usually start out by buying a couple of angels and then some neon
tetras, then wonder why the neons keep disappearing, clearly forgetting that
angels are cichlids as well, then they try putting in fish a little bigger and
then wondering why the angels are getting battered! clearly they are forgetting
that the angels are not the toughest of cichlids! what to do? well, I'll leave
the angel fish dilemma up to you on that one.
ok, my head is swimming around with other ideas, to the point of overlooking
some other details...if there's anything else you guys need to know, feel free
to ask!
p.s.....mouthbreeding convicts??

Hi Guys

Thanks for all your help with regards to my fish tanks. The big fish
tank with the angel, sharks, cichlids etc has been set up for 1 year
now and the cichlids have been the only problem so far.

I am really worried about what you have both said as I don't want any
of the fish to get injured or attacked. As I have 2 tropical tanks do
you think it would be better to split the fish up into those tanks.
I have the big tank with loads of fish and the small tank with the
simaese and glass cats.

How would I do this.

I'm so glad I ahev joined this group as everyone is so helpful !

in these tanks, you have a disaster waiting to happen. First off lat
me start by saying it's great that you are a hobbyist, we can always
have more around:) Now, down to the nitty gritty, ok, where do I
start?? Oh yeah, Angel fish in a tank full of faster fin nippers is
definitely a no-no. Mollies won't survive for very long in a fully
fresh water environment simply because they very much fare better in
a brackish environment with more carbonate hardness...Silver sharks
have been known to grow roughly a foot in length, (now we're getting
to the southeast asian species you have) Tiger barbs prefer a large
school of like kind or else they become bored semi-agressive fin
nippers! (get the idea?) so now you know what's going to happen to
your gouramis AND angel fish (by the way, the angel fish is south
american) the kuli loach is gonna be a midnight snack by any number
of fish in there. your red tailed shark is pretty
> quick enough to avoid trouble, however, your pleco is gonna grow
into a HUGE (18 inches) monster.
> tank 2: keep an eye on that frog...IF it is the species i am
thinking of, it is a voracious predator with a big mouth.
> tank 3: yes gold fish bowls work, but not for goldfish. Goldfish
are mostly a coolwater species of crucian carp that require ALOT of
aeration, and HEAVY filtration...they produce copius amounts of waste
and will toxify themselves in a bowl in no time
