Hi Gil, firstly regarding water parameters....i use tap water(thats right tap
water) in my area the water pressure is strong so all i do is use a hose with
attachment to blast the water into the pond this is normally sufficient to get
rid of the chlorine etc, my PH straight from the tap is 7.5, i do not messure
any other parameter! Water temp...i have no source of heating other than the
sun which makes for very high or very low readings from 19C down to -1C in
winter, i have found with the fish i have this is not a problem for them(i have
listed my stock below). The filtration i would reccomend you go for external
filters these being easier to clean and monitor, with a pump submersed in the
furthest point from your filter box to ensure good circulation and oxygenation
of water, if you live in a climate with a lot of sun you may also wish to add a
UV clarifier, at present i am not running one and my pond is fairly green but
healthy. Feeding i would reccomend feeding small amounts 4
or 5 times a day dependant on size of fish, with no particular set time
(strange as it sounds the fish will come to recognise your foot steps with
feeding time and rise to meet you, mine do). During the very cold winter month
feeding can be stopped completely as the fish will rest on the bottom of the
pond in an almost hibernation state.
My stock include.....
Gosanke 13"
Ghost koi * 3 7" to 18" the 18" inch fish is ripe with eggs.
Common Goldfish * 6 at 8+"
@50 Fry from goldfish
and last but not least @ 10 to 20 Koi fry of varying strains.
Obviously i do not expect this to cover the multitude of questions you must have
so if at any time you are on line and want to speak to me through MSN this is my
id yekim_4321@..., please feel free to e-mail me or speak to me
on-line, i have books at my side that i could pull info from for you. I can
also help you plan your filtration to match your pond (if you wish). OH one
last thing my pond is heavily planted which helps to create a healthy eco
system.
There is a lot i have not put, which would be confusing so if you want i can
break down these answers even further and give more detailed info.
when i can i'll get a pic of my pond for you!!!
Best regards
Mick

Howdy, Ok I got your message en stuff, but one thing I need to know, oh wait,
several things I need to know are as fllows: Water parameters, such as the PH
and alkalinity, water temperature, should I go with any specific type of
filtraton such as internal? Which times of the day should I feed them? Does
their metabolic rate slow down enough during the winter where I should cease
feeding them during that time? Also, are there any Koi or goldfish strains I
should avoid? Which would be better suited to outside conditions? Hopefully I
have covered all the bases :)

Hi, One important thing to remember with koi ponds is the depth to overwinter
safely it should really be at least 3feet deep, with excellent filtration. The
bigger the better for filters and pond, as its not unknown for koi to reach 48"
given the right condition. My pond is 16 feet * 6feet wide* 3feet deep, with
koi upto 16" and very large goldfish which breed very readilly and need thining
out.
If you need any in depth advice or have any more questions please feel free to
mail me at yekim_4321@....

Howdy y'all,
I'm sure some of you have seen me on here recently en stuff, but now
I guess it's my turn to ask a question...I'm looking into starting up
a backyard Koi pond and despite raising tropicals for what seems like
a billion years to me, I have never tried out the pond thing myself
yet. Yep, you guessed it, when it comes to ponds i'm clueless and
therefore, any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you for your time ...
Gil
