Hi all, I'm in the process of setting up my aquarium again after
several years without it, and I have a question regarding the light.
My tank is small, just 20"x12" approx, the light fitting in the hood
is for a bulb not a fluorescent tube, and I am thinking that it
would do more harm than good to have the bulb in there, as it will
affect the water temp too much. Any advice? I'm leaning towards
leaving the light out altogether as I'm sure the tank will recieve
plenty of natural light anyway. There will be a few real plants in
the tank, does this mean I HAVE to have a light source to help with
photosynthesis?
Thanks in advance for your help.
Lee
Hi Lee, Well if you are having real plants you will certainly need some
lighting, even if you use imitation, and I can recommend the silk ones you can
get these days, you may find the tank pretty dark. Perhaps you might like to try
a solution I used in a similar case. I used one of the low-energy bulbs, you
know the ones I mean? The curly ones we are all urged to use in the house to
save energy. These are in effect flourescent tubes, but bent! You can get small
10w ones. They do give out some heat but nowhere near as much as incandescent
bulbs so it shouldn't affect the water temperature too much and they last for
ages. Obviously you have to be careful that it doesn't get wet so good
cover-glasses are needed but I have been using them in a couple of tanks for
quite a while now with no problems.
