Hi Steve, welcome to the group! As others have said the cloudiness is quite
normal and will clear of it's own accord, personally I think that many people
have this problem when using artificial means of stimulating bacterial growth in
the filter (an essential before adding stock), the white stringy stuff is in
fact bacterial 'colonies' and again will disappear given time, but in any event
is harmless. In 30 years of fish-keeping I have never used such additives, my
preferred method is to set the tank up, wait until the water is up to temp and
all the bubbles have gone, then I add a cooked prawn! or some (dirty) gravel
from an established tank, after say a week if all has gone OK then I start to
add fish, slowly stocking the tank to allow the filter time to adjust to the
increased load. It is also possible in the early stages to add a hardy fish to
the tank, such as a Platy or Swordtail, even a small goldfish! (but in the case
of the latter good aeration is needed) or a Plec
(Plecostomus catfish, but these get BIG!). But whatever you do remember to feed
vary sparingly in the early days or you will overload the filter, causing the
water to cloud and excess food in the tank will also encourage the growth of
unsightly algae. Hope this doesn't sound too daunting and that yuo will soon
begin to reap the benefits of the great hobby of ours. If you have any more
questions please dont hesitate to ask.
Happy Fish-keeping
Steve

Hi All,
Just joined so hello to everyone!
Ive got a problem with my new tank and hope someone can help. Its a
100ltr all in sort of thing (heater, pump etc supplied from pet shop)
No real plants (plastic only) gravel at bottom.
Ive only had it a week, so ive not added any fish yet, just letting
it settle in etc as instructed by guide book. I have added some
chemicals that are suppossed to help the water adjust for the fish
(sorry, dont know what they were - made by tetra i think)
Anyway - first problem is water is very, very cloudy. I was not so
worried about this at first as guide book said it would go cloudy,
but how long will it take to clear? (someone told me its got
something to do with the growth of bacteria)
More of a concern is my second problem - ive noticed the appearance
of fine white strands of what look like spiders webbs on the plants
and other ornaments - kinda looks like a hammer house of horror movie
set!
Maybe im worrying too early, but things do not seem to be going well.
You may notice - I have not kept fish before and dont know a lot
about the subject - i am keen to learn and dont want my fish to
suffer due to my ignorance!
Thanks and all the best steve saunders
