Hiya, Thats the trouble with hoods, they don't think of people using externals!!
What type of hood is it? If it's the standard black metal type you should be
able to cut it with a junior hacksaw, on mine I decided which end the pipes were
going to enter the tank, if you have a flat horizontal back to the hood, just
measure back from the appropriate end cut a slot to the required depth and fold
the 'flap' under, squeezing it tight with a pair of pliers. This way you do not
have a sharp long edge to rub on the pipes. Any sharp edges can either be filed
down or covered with a piece of tape, plastic insulating tape is good or 'duct'
tape.
