Re: [Tropical Aquaria] Green Terror and Cichlid Fedding Problem

Hi,
Well you have a collection of very greedy feeders there!! The Tinfoils would
be first to the food I would guess. The new additions will probably take a while
to settle regardless of their size as they will be a little intimidated by the
established occupants. I would presume that there is a fair bit of cover for the
fish, perhaps you could move this around as this often helps to give the new
additions a chance to get their own piece of territory. It's likely that the
newcomers are getting a little food at least by scavaging after lights-out, you
could try an additional feed with the lights off, trying to target the new fish.
However I think that once the fish have settled and get hungry they will soon
start getting their share. You could also try flake as they will at least get
the chance of getting some before the catfish. Frozen mussels and prawns are
also good foods and can be easily targeted.
My only other point is I assume you are aware that ALL cichlids are aggressive
by nature, and that a Green Terror is well named! Once they get to adulthood or
if you have a pair then you may have your hands full, even the Jewels will try
to takeover the tank should they be a breeding pair. If possible I would get
hold of another tank just in case mayhem breaks out!

Regards
Steve

Can someone please help, I have a 6ft tank with the following in it.

Silver Tinfoils X 2 (4inch)
Orange Parrot Fish X 2 (4 Inch)
Jewel Cichlids X 2 (3 Inch)
Loaches X 4 (2 Inch)
Cat Fish X 2 (9 Inch and 5 Inch)

They all get along well and I have now had a problem, however my
partner has also bought me a 6inch long Green Terror and a 9inch
Cichlid of some kind, both quite big.

The problem is that I an using pellets and the parrots and the tin
foils and all the other eat it all up and the new two which are much
bigger than the rest miss out completely.

I have only had the new ones for 5 days, and I was hoping that they
might get the message that it is first come first served!! I am using
medium pellets, and I was thinking of using large size in the hope
that they would be to big for the others to eat in one bite.

I also use cat fish pellets that go straight to the bottom, and the
two new ones miss out on these also.

Is this normal? Or can I do something to help the new two get a bite.

Thanks

Jim
