Hi Andy,
Yes cross-breeding in cichlids is fairly common between closely related
species, convicts will readily breed with spilurum and sajicas. It's possible
that you could have firemouthxconvict crosses, but it's more likely that they
are convict/sajica crosses, these will show strong barring and dark throats.
Convicts, sajicas and spilurums are all very closely related as they are of the
same family. When young they are very hard to tell apart. As they grow sajicas
will show bright jade green eyes, spilurums eyes are blue with males growing
very definate humps. All these fish are quite sociable and are best kept in
small shoals if the tank is big enough. When very young they need plenty of
space as they are very easily 'stunted'. All these fish are also prolific
breeders, so you have been warned!!! :-)

Hi Steve,
Was wondering if you could help i know you keep Cichlids and this is
about them lol.
I rescued some fish that were going to be "disposed of" due to over
crowding.
Have you ever known crossbreeding of 2 different species? the ones i
rescued look like a cross between Convict & Firemouth i rescued quite
a few lol in varying sizes from 2cm to 12 cm long at the moment
they are in a Q tank with minimal decoration,
The main characteristic of these fish is most definitely Firemouth in
shape and colour but with the heavy barring of the Convict.
Was wondering if you had ever known cross breeding like this,
Cheers
Andy
