when i joined this group, i thought (and hoped) it was a tropical
aquaria group.

how wrong can i be. out of the last ten messages (not including this
one!) only two are are fish related.

if i wanted to join a dating group i would of.

this is the second yahoo group i'm leaving in as many months for the
same reason.

spamming from other 'dating' groups seems to get everywhere, maybe in
the future when yahoo have stopped all this spam i might rejoin some
of the groups, until then i can manage without.

Hi all,
Does anyone know of any Angel Fish breeders in the Cambridge area.
I have, what I thought to be, a pair of mature marble angelfish, which
have been breeding for several months now.
They both go through the courting rituals and then lay eggs on either
the slate or the broad leaf amazon swords.
It now appears that I may have a pair of females, the dominate one
laying the eggs and the second one, acting as a "surrogate" male.
So, I really need to find a 1 or 2 males.
Many thanks

Carl Jenkins

Hi, I think the species you are referring to is probably C. synspilus, A
beauriful large species of cichlid of Central America. Finding a good breeding
pair is quite difficult, however, once a pair have bred successfully they are
quite prolific, this should be taken into consideration when attempting to breed
as they fry are fast growing and will need a huge amount of tank space to grow
properly, stunting and high mortality will otherwise occur.
The problems you are encountering can be due to several factors, it may be that
the eggs are not being fertilised, this could be due to incomptabilty, or, this
not bieing uncommon in Cichlids, in fact you have 2 females! It is not uncommon
for a subdominant female to take on the 'male' role.
However, there could be other factors, if the eggs are disappearing then it
almost certainly dur to them being eaten. This will only stop as and when the
fish 'learn' to guard the eggs. It is also imprtant that once eggs are laid
there is minimum disturbance as this increases the egg-eating tendency.
If after a few days the eggs are white, this is due to 'fungussing' an
indication that the fish are are tending the eggs properly, they should be
picking up the eggs and basically cleaning them in their mouths and spitting
them back into place. If the eggs dur fungus then they will no longer adhere to
the nest site and simply drop into the substrate, hence the disappearance.
The use of artificial hatching is a common practice. It will require a seperate
tank, will good but not powerful filtration, a high water flow is not needed. If
the eggs are laid on a removable surface, this should be removed and placed
vertically into the rearing tank, directly below this an airstome needs to be
place so that there is a constant flow of water over the eggs, this will help to
prevent the eggs fungussing. Should the eggs hatch the airstone can be removed.
The fry will require feeding withinn a day or two of hatching and as much tank
space as can be provided, a 48" tank just for the fry is not exceptional!!
within a matter of a few weeks if the hatching is large, say 50+ the fry will
need thinning again.
As you can see the breeding of such a potentially large fish is no small
undertaking and whilst it is nice to successfully breed fish at home, you really
do need to be fully aware of the amount of work involved in this.
I hope that the above has been useful to you, and perhaps to any others thinking
of breeding the larger Cichlid species.
Steve

Subject: [Tropical Aquaria] Breeding chiclasoma syphilis

Hi All

Please can someone advise, I have a male and female " Red/Pink belly
chiclasoma syphilis" and they have been together for one and half
years now. In the last 4 months the female has laid eggs 3 times, and
then they keep watch over then until they turn a White colour.

Thye male is about 18 inches, and the female is about 12 inches nose
to tail.

It seems that after about 5/6 days all the eggs just dissapear, so I
am thinking that they must eat them.

There is nothing else in the tank so it must be them that are doing
the eating!!!

Should I take the eggs out early? And place them in a net enclouser
or something.

We would really like to see if we could get young out of them.

If anyone has any ideas please advise.

Regards

Jim

Hi Jim,
are you sure about the name ? I searched Cichlids. com &
Fishbase but they do not recognise the name , has it got a Common
Name ?
It could be that for breeding they need different parameters in the
water for successful brood hatching, I know some fish will breed
in any water but the water chemistry can work against the eggs
themselves by either making the outer layer too hard for water to
flow through it or can make it easy for fungal attack which can
also kill the eggs ,
I am sure some others will give advice,
Steve is one of the best with Cichlids.

Regards
Andy

Hi Sandy,
Sorry to hear about the snail problem.
I found a small group (about 4) of clown loaches will do the job better
than any chemical remedy. Plus you also have the added attraction of
watching them grow and start exhibiting their own unique personalities.
Hope this helps

Hi all,
Been ages since I been in, but need some info,
Over last weekend I had a major problem with one of my tanks, it
has been up & running for over 3 years, with no major issues ,
until last saturday,
Had a power loss a couple weeks back during the night and have
no idea how long power was out, I know after a certain time without
oxygenated water flowing through the filter media that bacteria
colony will start to die off.
When I checked water after the power out everything was fine,
Did a water test Saturday and found that the level of ammonia was
off the scale , so checked Nitrites & Nitrates as well
Nitrites were negligible and Nitrates were a bit high, Carried
out huge water change, and got levels back to acceptable limits.

Now i have noticed the filter doesnt seem to be working like it
used to, so is it on its way out ?? or is OTS rearing its ugly
head?
I want to keep with an internal filter (present one Interpet IPF
Duo2)and someone mentioned to me about a HOB filter are they
available over here in UK i know they seem to be a favourite in
the USA

Thanks in advance for any help
Regards
Andy

Er.. the behaviour what we consider kissing in fish is actually aggression.
Angels & cichlids have to display dominance before mating or especially
before forming pairs for mating. Clown loaches also sometimes exhibit
aggressive behaviour and is perfectly normal.

I doubt they are planning to mate as they reach maturity at 3-5 years I
think and even then are very difficult to breed in captivity.

Hi Dave,

Sorry about your Molly, unfortunately these things happen (sometimes
more often than we would like!!!)

I had a bizarre thing happen yesterday with one of my Flying Foxes.
We heard a clanging coming from the top of the tank and when we
looked the metal cover for one of the strip lights was jiggling
about. I removed the cover and saw something go over the back of the
tank. By the time we got the 'something' out from behind the tank it
was a very dead Flying Fox. I felt really sorry as the poor little
thing probably burnt itself on the light before taking a tumble and
then gasping for breath. There is a cover on the tank and the only
escape routes are where the filter pipes come in, and these are not
very large, so what happened was very unfortunate.

Kind regards,

Jan
