It's been thirty years since some slack-jawed music critic foisted the 'new
Dylan' (or was it Springsteen?) tag on Forbert, but he's survived that and
proved that he is his own man. His career has taken in stints with major
labels, but his new recording home is with the newly-minted Freeworld label,
a division of Evangeline Records, a North London indie label that knows a
good record when it hears it.
STEVE FORBERT: 'THE PLACE AND THE TIME'
(FREEWORLD FREEM5003 - RELEASED MONDAY, 27th APRIL 2009)
Difficult as it is to take in, but Steve Forbert is into a career in music
that's endured for over thirty years. Time for a new album, I guess, and The
Place and The Time is the one. A twelve-track affair, it's yet more proof of
Forbert's skills as a writer of sharp lyrical barbs and strong melodies.
Recorded last year in Nashville, The Place and The Time is another winning
collection of idiosyncratic, funny ha-ha and funny peculiar ruminations on
the modern condition, played out via a variety of contrasting popular music
styles, all sung in Forbert's distinctive tones. The moods range from the
contemplative to the quizzical, the amused to the bemused, and many
interesting stop-off pints in between.
