Re: [UK Reptiles] New snake New Member....Hello

Ok first thing, that substrate. Some people use sand
and some use corn cob with out any problems - however,
personally i would take it off that and get it onto
something like aspen or even at a push small beech
chips. If you wish you could even use paper towel or
newspaper although these don't look as nice. The
reason i would go away from corn cob and definately
sand is that it has a tendency to get between the
belly scales and cause sore's and, later on,
infections. However if you have bags of this stuff
then use it but keep an eye on the underside of your
snake and make sure that nothing starts to develop.
Next i am afraid you are going to HAVE TO spend money
again and get a thermostat. This will control the
temps all year round. It is very important to get one
of these and a good thermometer ASAP. Problems WILL
occur if the temps aren't monitored.
Finally i am a big one for pointing people in the
right direction withou telling them the answer. So i
suggest that while you are buying the above you get
yourself a cornsnake book aswell so you can learn some
more. There are allso literally millions of websites
out there about cornsnakes although some are far from
perfect they will get you started. Your new pet is
fairly resillient so a few mistakes won't be punished
too badly but it is important to get out there and
start hunting for as much info as possible.
Unfortunately there are no UK groups that are busy
anymore despite constant attempts to revive them so
your best bet is to join one of the forums we have.
There are a few of these and although they can get
quite firey at times they are a fantastic source of
information. If you do a search for livefood.com
forums you will find a large one, there is also c-view
media forums which although very political and full of
arguments is IMO better than livefood. There are
others like reptile crazy (if that's what it is still
called) and one other springs to mind,
www.herpetologyexchange.com although this is fast
becoming a more specialised forum. Happy hunting and
sorry for the length of this reply.
