Hi,
I also have an axolotl. I think if you turn it upside down there should be a
small bulge at the base of the tail, if its pinkish i think its a boy and if its
paleish i think its a girl (but that could be the other way around). They eat
normal earthworms and i wouldn't bother with a filter if i were you, mine has
lived in not very clean water for nearly 4 years and is still going strong i
just clean it out every couple months or so.

Not easy with just one but if you have both sexes you can tell the
males with thier bigger heads and the bulg near the vent where they
keep their boy bits.
