Well actually both are acceptable in Britain, according to the
Oxford English Dictionary.

The common language we are using is English, so perhaps we
should use English spelling of English words. :-)

It is not the variant spelling that is the problem, it is constant
mistyping of some contributors that irritates whilst (spelling is
correct, I have just checked) reading.
