This booklist was sent to me by a respected political academic. I have not read
any so far but can vouch for the sender's progressive integrity.
Booklist:
A People´s History of the United States, published by HarperCollins, by Howard
Zinn, historian, Ph.D from Columbia University, Professor at Spelman College and
Boston University, visiting professor at the University of Paris and University
of Bologna. Received several academic awards for his work as an historian.
Bad News from Israel by Greg Philo and Mike Berry of the Glasgow University
Media Group. Pluto Press. It shows the distortion of news in British Television.
These reports will in the future be referred to by historians as factual truth.
A complement to Bad News from Israel is Peace Under Fire, published by Verso,
with introduction by Edward Said.
The Sorrows of Empire by Chalmers Johnson (Verso). Johnson is one of those
establishment figures who "turned" from being a pro-Vietnam War Berkeley
historian advising the CIA to a truth teller. He has also written Blowback in
which he predicted the vengeful events of September 11 before they happen and
described how the Pentagon, under Clinton had taken over US foreign policy - in
effect, carrying out a military coup.
Letters from Lexington: Reflections on Propaganda, by Noam Chomsky, Pluto Press.
He demonstrates how each and every commentary on world events is determined and
shaped by how far it conforms to US business interests. He also shows how the US
ruling elite, unlike overt dictatorships, doesn't usually need to resort to
coercion, but achieves the same result through its educational system and the
way jobs are allocated. He also shows how the term "moderate" has been used to
describe Hitler, Mussolini, Suharto, etc.
Parecom (Verso) by Michael Albert, the founder of ZNet (www.zmag.org.) an online
newspaper, offers a vision of life "after capitalism".
The Enemy Within by Seumas Milne (Verso) is about the power of the state and the
vassal role of most of the media.
The Fire This Time, by Ramsey Clark, former US Attorney General, first published
in 1992 published by International Action Centre, 39 W. 14th Street, Rm206, New
York, NY 10011.
War in Colombia: Made in the USA, published in 2003 also by the International
Action Centre.
From Brian Mitchell. Evolution.
"The most remarkable thing about the world is that you can understand it."
(Einstein.)
