Aubergines or Eggplants the difference is purely
a capitalist tool to alienate the proletariat from
his authentic task in spreading class consciousness
and overthrowing the capitalist system by means of an
inevitable and scientifically proven historical materialism.

Like our colonial cousins in the new world I dont
understand the "goodness gracious me" reference. My
reference was from a movie called True Romance. The Dennis
Hopper/ Christopher Wallken scene if anyone has stopped
watching Dracula and Zombie movies long enough to watch
it.

As I understand it, Aubergines *are* eggplants in American. I guess the

A few points. 1) This place is called "UK Soap
Box". You can't expect me to be uncontentious
here!!<br>2) I agree few rape cases reach court, but as I said
in my previous post, more women are being incredibly
brave and reporting the crime, and the police are being
more successful in getting prosecutions. I find it
incredibly hard to believe that while in 1898 there were 328
murders and only 236 rapes (with a smaller population),
in 1996 there were 679 murders but a massive 5759
recorded rapes. Now, I do not believe that many more women
are being raped than in Victorian times (perhaps
double or triple, judging by the murder rate) but I do
believe that many, many more women are coming forward.
<br><br>As an aside, you will be pleased to learn that
Blasphemy has all but died out, with the last prosecution
in 1929. Obviously we are now god-fearing folk...

Martin, as usual you are your contentious self
and once again I dissagree with you. The reason that
few courts prosecute suspected rapists is simple.
very few rapes either reach court or are reported in
the first place.

I think your comment about police wanting to keep
paperwork and crime figures to a minimal is totally unfair.
<br>Only in recent years have women been encouraged to
report crimes of rape and this shows a more realistic
number as opposed to a "blind" forecast.<br>The fact
that a woman has been raped is bad enough only she is
then expected to stand up in court and relive the
whole sordid episode in front of an 'audience' one of
those being her attacker. Have you any idea how that
would feel??<br>The police may seem a bit harsh in
dealing with this crime but only to indicate what it may
be like in court. If the woman can not cope with the
police investigation then it is fair to say that she
would find it almost impossible to cope being cross
examined in a court of law.<br>As for the majority of
women having no faith in the police whatsoever, I
wonder if this has more to do with the history of womens
oppression. It is only in recent years that women are finally
being taken seriously in their own right. <br>At one
time a mans word would be taken before a womans and
all judges were male, as were the police.

Hmm. I think the true number of rapes has stayed
roughly the same - I do not believe that only 1170 people
were raped in 1979 and 5759 was the true number in
1996, despite what I think of the Tory record on crime.
What has happened is that more women are being brave
enough to come forward when they have been raped, and
the police are treating cases much better.<br><br>To
slag off the police, in this instance, is wrong. It is
still the case that few courts prosecute suspected
rapists.

Yes it,s disgusting the percentage of reported
rapes is minimal. The majority of females who are raped
have no faith in the police whatsoever. In addition to
this police are known to put off the victims to keep
down both paperwork and crime figures.

There were almost 3,000 rapes of women in London
last year. That figure has spurred Scotland Yard to
launch its biggest ever campaign against sex attacks.
Last year 2,811 women were raped in London,
representing a 40 per cent increase on the 1998 figure of
1,993. In 1999 there were 2,270 rapes. Gang rapes are
now of particular concern to the police as last year
the Met recorded 37 cases where women were attacked
by between two and six men which is an average of
more than three per month. The number of sex offences
overall also increased, with one taking place every hour
in London. At Inner London Crown Court, Sayek Miah,
24, and Andy Udenze, 23, both of Tottenham, were
jailed for 18 months whilst Anthony Ugoh, 21, of Leyton,
was jailed for nine months for conspiring to rape a
student. Police found the woman, 23, who had been
celebrating her birthday in the West End in January, barely
conscious on the back seat of a car with her skirt up
around her waist.<br>The crime explosion is also
witnessing the proliferation of violent gangs. A Somalian
youth was stabbed in a confrontation with a gang of up
to 50 other youths armed with knives, iron bars and
bottles in an incident in southeast London. He is
reported as having been stabbed in the back after
apparently running from a group of West Indian youths in
Woolwich and the police are investigating the possibility
that the attack was racially motivated.<br>Police said
they were called to a large gang who were creating a
disturbance in General Gordon Square. Witnesses claim they
were armed with metal bars and bottles. The gang fled
when confronted by police.<br>It gives those of us who
have been involved in our struggle for years no
pleasure at all to be able to say that our warnings have
come true but they manifestly have come true with
dreadful consequences for thousands of Londoners. Thanks
to political correctness ordinary people are
suffering. We hope, however, that as these odious crimes
take place regularly in London and not yet in York,
Perth or Fishguard, they can put two and two together.
Similarly, having fifty-strong gangs of West Indian youths
running amok with violent weapons paints a very grim
picture of what is in store for the rest of the country
when London gets too full! It's really up to the
people of this country to decide; do they want these
events happening in their areas?

My Uncle works at Heathrow in security, and he
says these illegal immigrants/asylum seekers or
whatever name you give them bring in suitcases full of the
most vile rotting meat, dripping with blood and
wrapped in plastic, these range from antelope heads,
tortoise legs, ant-eaters, bits of cats such as lunx or
puma etc.... the baggage handlers have complained, but
the customs people consider themselves not paid
enough to mess around in such disgusting bags, so let
them through.<br><br>Anyway the cause of this disease
has now been traced...<br>"the outbreak was caused by
the 'O type' foot & mouth virus that is currently
rampant in Thailand. (there are in fact eight different
strains of foot & mouth viruses). <br><br>Apparently, a
discarded sandwich or meat product from an airline disposal
unit returning from Asia, was picked up by a pig swill
merchant in Northhumberland who failed to heat treat the
waste. This waste ended up in at the farm where it all
started and subsequently spread. "<br><br>I no longer
believe it may be the government, but it's a sad day when
one knows that this is the kind of thing they would
do.

Just Selby train drivers?<br>It's hardly the
train drivers fault there was a Landrover on the track.
<br><br>Imagine driving along a road and having a schoolchild run
out in front of you. A car driver has a few controls
he can use, steering, brakes, horn. Normal reaction
would be apply the brakes and steer clear. Imagine the
same situation with no steering and a few thousand
tons of trailer behind the car, I don't think you
would be able to do an awful lot except slam on the
brakes and pray, then watch events unfold in front of
you knowing there is absolutely nothing you can
do.<br><br>The really annoying thing about the Selby crash is
that this is not the only accident where the barriers
on the road have not been long enough and vehicles
have ended up on tracks, in this governments term. In
the year 2001 you would have thought there would be
sufficient evidence to make the powers that be aware that
current barrier guidelines are inadequate, but no we have
to have a few deaths first to make the
point.<br>Train drivers of any kind deserve our support, they
should withdraw their services completely until the rail
infrastructure has been modernised. We the public should pay
them to stay at home AND we should fight any attempt
to recruit drivers from elsewhere to cover for our
own. We couldn't do it for nurses as we all need our
health service to run no matter what, but it is high
time our governments stopped trying to cut corners and
stockpile money during their term in office to try and buy
a few votes. Brown is sitting on loads of cash from
the rise in fuel, enough to fund emergency assistance
to railtrack to get track maintainance done, there
is more to compensate the farmers for the loss of
stock and there was probably enough to see to all the
bridges that cross railways where barriers are to short
to prevent an accident like Selby.<br><br>Of course
Brown is far to busy thinking up ways to give with one
hand and take back with the other, he spent his
formative years learning from Conservative pro's like Nigel
Lawson.

I wanted to become a farmer as I used to have
several relatives in the business.<br>Firstly you need to
live the life to appreciate it.<br>Our farmers have
only been parasites since Britain joined the EEC now
the EU, who formed the common agricultural policy.
When that came into force farmers no longer got paid
for what they produced, they got paid for being
farmers.<br>Now using the mining industry as an example is a good
start, when that industry finally colapsed they weren't
being paid for what they produced, they were paid for
being miners. Mining is a very dangerous job and of
course I don't begrudge them the pay they got, but when
the EU passed a ruling that member state governments
could not subsidise it's industries that signed the
death warrant for mining as the industry had to cover
it's operating costs from sales, the wage bill was far
higher than say Poland and the rest is history.<br>We
can point the finger of blame directly at unelected
commissioners who are trying to form a bland European
superstate at our expense. <br>This country has a lot more
pain to endure if we continue down the route to a
superstate and it will face pain if we don't.<br><br>Wages
and the standard of living in the majority of member
states are lower, governments continually talk about
"when it is economically prudent to join" this is the
point where we have nothing left and we HAVE to go
along with the status quo.<br><br>Firstly Britain
should tell Europe that it will pay no more in
membership fees until it gets a place on every major
committee in Brussels, then we should tell them that the
POUND stays, but we might peg it at exactly the same
value as the Euro when it has equalled the value of the
pound as it stands. We should demand that all European
states road taxes and duties on fuel be raised to the
same as ours, car prices across Europe should go
up.<br><br>Everything in Europe should go up to meet OUR standards,
this would guarantee a pay rise to all Greeks,
Spaniards, Italians and many others, raising standards
across Europe and "harmonising" the economies at a level
we are used to, those people would then be able to
come here and see where all their tourists come from
and why their countries are so popular with
us.<br><br>If we don't do this now, our incomes will go down,
but our taxes will not, crime prevention will become
more expensive as more and more people will smuggle
booze and fags to get round the tax problem.<br><br>We
have to stay with Europe unfortunately because they
are the nearest trading block and when fossil fuels
begin to run out they will be the only nations near
enough to maintain any sort of trading link. But we must
gain some control over the commission.<br><br>Farming
over here suffered with the outbreak of BSE, measures
were introduced to make our Beef production BSE free,
what happened in Euro land? they carried on feeding
their cattle animal waste and their cattle got BSE.
They should be forced to learn from member states
problems and put in place measures across the whole bloc
that will eradicate the problem. Foot and mouth can be
vaccinated against for around 35p per animal, the trouble is
the animal is worht very little to start with that
the farmer can't justify spending the 35p on it. The
animal is worth so little because WE the CONSUMER shop
around for the CHEAPEST product and the supermarket flex
their muscles forcing the farmer to near bankruptcy.
<br><br>This country needs to put in place some policies that
will re-distribute wealth more evenly and that I fear
is the last thing any British political party would
do.

If I drive a car and I can't stop within the
distance I can see to be clear because I am driving too
fast, I get prosecuted, and Tony Blair is persecuting
the motorist continuously saying "If it saves one
life it'll be worth it" - why can trains speed along
out of control, when I can't do this on a
motorway?<br><br>Why do they always compare safety when travelling by
train with that in cars in passenger-miles, which
distorts the fact that most accidents in cars happen
within 1 mile from the home or destination, and in urban
areas, when trains don't provide a service for this part
of the journey. What a load of crap!!!!
