Hi Everyone, following my last email regarding the events building this summer in the face of expansion of the coal industry I thought I would update you with the latest news and some interesting reading.
At the end of last week activists jumped a coal train bound for Drax power plant in Yorkshire- a bold move that highlighted the upcoming camp and the need to address the industrial challenge of fossil fuel dependence- see reports below. The climate camp movement has promised a 'summer of discontent' if the Government continues to rely on the use of coal as a solution to energy security. Mass public opinion and action matters, and indeed may be the only way of convincing policy makers to alter course.
Enough said by me but please have a look at the following links and an excellent program aired on Radio 4 last week. Again, if you are interested in getting involved this summer at the camp or otherwise, don't hesitate.

I am sat at my desk in Bristol willing on the summer break from my studies, a truly exciting time as I head to Ireland and France on my bicycle soon, taking time out after living in a busy but vibrant city for the past two years.
This summer holds more than just scenic travel; the proposed site for a coal-fired power station in Kent, England would not be on the ideal 'to-do' list of the everyday soul wishing to get away. However, that is where this year's 'Camp for Climate Action' is taking place.
The August 2008 camp is part of a mass movement against the political and economic framework that is driving us towards an increasingly unstable and inhabitable planet. July last year saw thousands of concerned individuals from many walks of life converging on an empty piece of land near Heathrow airport in London to set up camp for a week of sustainable living, workshops, films, talks and peaceful but large scale direct action against the proposals to expand the aviation industry.
This year it's coal.
We are not saying the issues have changed, only that the dots need to be joined in terms of identifiing the people responsible for calling the shots on the development of damaging industries. Despite a growing global awareness of the most pressing of issues, something is going wrong. The government will not halt its drive to expand these industries, even in the face of multiple peer-reviewed and acclaimed scientific reports stating the need to dramatically reduce CO2 emissions. And these are conservative estimates.
If built, Kingsnorth power station will emit between 6 and 8 million tons of CO2 every year. The investment in coal is part of a raft of hypocrisy we are being force fed by our governments- why not renewable, clean energy? We need to break the habit and begin to invest in a cleaner and safer future. Damage wreaked on the natural environment is already manifesting itself in terms of social unrest, food riots, starvation, species loss and pollution. Our quality of life is directly linked to the decisions we make – and those that our governments make. We have a black hole in our climate policy, things need to change.
This means leaving coal in the ground. We can no longer afford to live the dream that fossil fuels are the 'black gold' they were once praised as; indeed the price to be paid is growing larger, the longer we come rely on them.
So how do we affect this change? Well, to me the answer and the hope has come from being an active part of a growing global movement, by taking action at a grass roots level and refusing to blindly accept decisions made by governments which hold huge consequences for all life on this planet. The concern and the movement is growing with every peice of research published, every story of flooding or drought, every penny that petrol rises by and every child that is born into an uncertain world.

The camp last year was incredibly welcoming and not at all disorganized. All present, including the police were very impressed. There were many workshops throughout the week, the food was great, company was fantastic and the vision was optimistic. The opportunity to act as part of an organized and peaceful group is rewarding not only in terms of tangible achievements but the hope and strength instilled within us.
The camp is based on 'do it yourself' principles and has no leaders, sharing skills and ideas- requiring all involved to act as a whole. Other camps globally include North America, Australia and Europe. Come along and be part of the change!

I am writing to you from the big green gathering site in the Mendips,
near bristol- a fantastic festival bringing together a wide range of people. The week has been chock full of ideas and workshops,
networking and music. true fun.
so, I'd like to make those of you who may not know, aware of the 'Camp
for Climate Action', occurring near heathrow on 14th to 21st of this
month. The aim will be, quite simply to raise awareness and halt the
harmful and uncompromising growth of the aviation industry. Hundreds of
protesters will arrive at the, as yet undisclosed location by the
airport for a week of festival- combining fun with workshops, talks and
peaceful direct action. Opposing the hypocritical mechanisms the
government has put in place to sustain economic growth while putting
all of our lives at stake.
The facts are here, the time for acting on our intentions has arrived
and we don't have the time we'd all like to prepare for the sudden
shift in lifestyle and social norms inevitably on their way. Flying has
to go. Government initiatives suggest that we change our light bulbs
and install rain water collecting systems to lower our carbon foot
prints while the cost of flying drops every year and every year the
damage we do to the atmosphere increases.
We need the government to act, but this camp will be an attempt to push
from the bottom up. Already the injunction taken out against the
protest has shown just how much BAA are panicking, we have the ability
to make a milestone change here and this week at the big green has
instilled a real faith that the movement is stronger now than ever, but
not only that, we are seeing the scales beginning to tip as the gap
between skeptisism and plain fact narrows. Climate change is happening
now, what we do now decides what the future holds. those that came
before us didn't know the problem, those that come after us will have
severely limited options. We have both the power and responsibility to
make a radically better world.
By uniting in collective action this summer we can begin to make it happen.

is the industry, not the individual. The message remains the same- we can all make a difference whether within a massive organisation, or the government, or just one person with the power to act. :)

People & Planet as part of the Stop AIDS Campaign coalition will take part in a whole day of action on Tue 20 Mar.
The overall aim is to get Benn's head straight on AIDS before the G8 Development Minister's meeting and to win the support of more MPs to push the UK government to take action!
The date is set and Benn is booked for an hour. Now, we've got to get as many
groups to London as possible as well as getting everyone to invite their MPs to the event and book them for a lobbying session in the afterwards. We can double the numbers of MPs by everyone booking their Uni + home MPs.
The event is a joint event with other members of the Stop AIDS Campaign coalition. Please get in touch with other groups campaigning on HIV/AIDS on your campus/ in your school/college (e.g. Student Stops AIDS Campaign, Medsin/Pharmaware) to coordinate things like coming to London, booking MPs, etc.
There is money available for travel expenses and we'll provide food and drinks for the day, but we need to know roughly how many people of each group are coming, so please get in touch with me via email of phone by Fri 23 Feb.
We will draft an invitation for MPs, which you can use, as soon as we get the confirmation which room we will be in.

What is this email about? Quite simply we are looking for people / community groups / organisations to spare a couple
hours at most of their time to walk along a stretch of Bristol's watercourses counting abandoned trolleys.
When? Before 9 February 2007.
How? If you can help I will send you a letter explaining more, a survey sheet to record trolleys seen and a map of the watercourse you intend to survey.
Why? Abandoned trolleys in Bristol City are a real problem. Bristol City Council is currently in the process of adopting new legislation regarding trolleys that will result in a new trolley collection service. The aim is to use an independent company contracted to collect stray trolleys throughout the city with costs incurred passed onto the supermarkets. Following a previous trolley survey in 2005 which you may have helped with, a second survey is needed so to be able to measure the future success of this new trolley collection scheme
and locate current problem areas.
Can you help? It would be much appreciated if you and or your society could. If so please can you let me know by replying to this email. Please state which section of which watercourse you are volunteering to survey and where you would like the survey pack sent. (Can be emailed or posted).

So I have been asked to give a short presentation next week about proposed changes to UWE's transport policies. I would like to come representing a specific group, in this case people and planet. Is there any steering committee you could forward these proposals around to to get their ideas and feedback before I put my presentation together?
I need feedback pretty quickly if I am going to incorporate any comments intio my
presentation.
This is the e-mail I sent out to our transport planning students:
Dear fellow Transport Planning students,
I have been asked to prepare a short presentation to staff and research students of CTS about proposed improvements and changes to UWE's transport policies and travel plan on Feb. 6th as part of a travel plan seminar happening at 12:30 at Frenchay campus (e-mail Kiron for the specific room). As you may know, UWE has hired Steve Ward to be the new travel planner, and there is a unique opportunity to move the UWE campuses further in the direction of sustainability and choice in transport.
Part of my presentation will attempt to reflect the opinions, needs, and perspectives of other students on the course, as we all have a unique outlook on travel planning at UWE with regard to our current coursework combined with our individual experiences traveling to and from
campus.
Many in our community agree that something meaningful has to be done to change the current state of transport around the Frenchay campus, with gridlock of the surrounding roadways making travel by bus or car unreliable, wasteful, and frustrating, and travel by foot or bike (at least perceived as) polluted and dangerous. UWE must play its part in relieving its contribution to this chronic problem, as well as reducing its share of carbon emissions. Neither of these problems are going away unless we start to take responsibility for our contribution to them as individuals and as a community.
So, could you please take a couple of minutes and think about what policies and new infrastructure are needed to improve travel to and from UWE, reduce congestion, and minimize the university's carbon footprint, which (anecdotally at least) is larger than other institutions the same size, due largely to
the surrounding low density land uses.
Below, I am pasting in an outline that I have developed in consultation with People and Planet, and other environmentally concerned members of our university. Please let me know if you agree with them, disagree with them, or want to add any other ideas or proposals.
The sooner you can get back to me, the better.

Green Travel Team Recommendations :
1. For reasons of environmental damage, congestion relief, and equity issues, we propose to raise parking fees to cover parking costs (actual costs to be determined). In other words, non drivers should not be subsidizing the cost of parking through their university fees and other taxes. This could mean that parking fees increase substantially, with any freed up revenue going to enhance public transport, walking, and cycling facilities, to make these modes
more attractive.
2. students, faculty and staff should have the opportunity of paying their parking fees daily to avoid habitual driving as a result of the 'fixed cost' of an annual parking permit
3. Bicycle parking is not currently adequate. Improved parking, in the form of some combination of covered, monitored racks, bicycle lockers, or attended parking should be provided by the university
4. Lighting along the Lockleaze- Frenchay pathway should be considered.
5. The transport desk at the reception should be better equipped, and staff trained to provide full information on cycling, walking, public transport, as well as parking information. (currently it only deals with parking).
6. The UWE website should have complete information on cycling, walking, and public transport, in addition to a statement supporting the use of these modes.
7. Buses- The university should look at
providing free bus services for all students, as other universities do with good results. UWE should examine its options to collectively bargain with FGW and other bus operators to secure the best deal for its students. At the moment, bus service is overpriced, slow, and generally unreliable.
8. Cycles should be allowed on buses, either inside the bus or on the exterior using specially designed racks. Cyclists need access on buses to make longer journeys possible, in case of mechanical breakdown, illness, or for many other reasons.
9. Cycle training should be provided through the university at no cost to those who are interested.
10. ridesharing should be coordinated by the university, and parking for carshares prioritized.

Just a note to say, Nadia of the GROFUN initiative (growing real organic food in urban neighbourhoods) is having a meeting for those interested tomorrow (Tuesday) to outline the plan. Basically it involves combining gardens in Montpelier to create various growing spaces. The produce from these will then be pooled and everyone involved in growing will receive a weekly veg box for free! - well, in return for a couple of hours gardening.
She wants the scheme to be confined to Montpelier at first for those contributing garden space, but will need some willing volunteers to help on work days to get it up and running. I think this is an idea worth supporting and as far as I know nothing else like this is happening in Bristol, or even the UK? It's the ultimate in promoting locally produced food and re-connecting people with the land and their neighbourhoods.
So, I'll be attending the meeting and anybody else that wants to come along; it's at 24 York Rd in Montpelier, at 7:30pm, tomorrow. It would be helpful if you let me know if your likely to be coming as Nadia has asked for an idea of numbers.

1. Placement of recycling bins. There needs to be more of them in more prominent places on campus.
2. Switch the electricity supplier to one which invests money in renewable energy, ie. Ecotricity.
3. University and union cafes/bars to switch to using local produce.
4. University and union cafe/bars to start composting food waste.
5. Frenchay halls of residence to start composting food waste.
6. Provide places to recycle paper cups.
7. Increase the cost of parking permits. This money could be used to put in place an effective uwe bus service.
8. Any bulbs which are to be replaced, must be replaced with low energy bulbs.

Please find attached 2 jpg's that constitute the flyer (you prob cant see it through yahoo groups) for Rise Up and for 1x PP event, 2x Respect events and 1x Gender is Fake event.
Hopefully shall be ready for wednesday for collection in Bedminster - going to need 2 people to go down and collect - who can accompany Dave? - There's likely to be 2x big heavy cardboard boxes, maybe an idea to take a wheelie suitcase of sorts!

Im not back til thursday aftermoon I'm afraid. And then Im going away again over the weekend. I might be able to do freshers stuff at glenside but ive got lectures all day monday, tuesday, thursday and friday morning. I can do the film showing on wed night.
