This is a true story going back to '91. To anyone
who knows me, I apologise - you've heard it over a
few beers many times before; to Mr James Bohne, last
heard of in Canada: you do have a right of
reply!

The background is that we were a scooter club called
'The Bats' based in South East London. Paid up members
of the Vespa Club, and a group of us usually
attended longer rallies including EuroVespa. we had
decided to support EV'91 in Kreuzlingen, Switzerland. One
of our members was corresponding with a gent in
Canada by the name of James Bohne. Things fell in place,
and Mr Bohne asks if he could travel with us to the
rally. He will be in England for a few weeks prior to
that, and will have a chance to get to know us. All
well and good.
Anyway James arrives at our club
night in the local pub. He's bought himself a Vespa.
Curiosity dictated that we should look .... well, it was a
Vespa, or had been at one time! Based around a tatty
P200, an engine or indeterminate capacity, but one that
provided a self-lubricating system for the underside of
the frame. The exhaust - silencer it was not - had
been the product of some back-street hammer shop in
Taiwan. Anyway, James was pleased with his
purchase.
We were a little less than sure about the ability of
this machine to cover a round trip of over 2,000
miles, and as Richard Hammond and I were riding up to
Nottingham the very next weekend for the Veteran Vespa Club
rally, we invited James along for the ride.
We
knocked James up at the appointed time on the Saturday
morning. Riding through London to the motorway, Richard
and I notice we have lost James. Behind us in the
kerb was he. A broken clutch cable .. well it happens
to us all. James wasn't carrying a spare (on a 300
mile round trip?), so I pulled one from my toolbox,
and passed it to him. He looks at me. 'OK, I'll do it
... give me your tools'; another blank look!
Life
from there became bareable, and we joined the M1 for
the slog up North. It must have been Leicestershire
when the sound of that finely tuned machine faded from
our ears .. but it took us a minute or two to
realise. When we did, we pulled over. And waited. And
waited. He'd obviously broken down .... or had he? What
if he's been knocked off - his riding wasn't all
that? after a wait, we decided to ride back along the
grass side of the hard-shoulder at walking pace. We had
covered no less than 50 metres when Leicester
Constabulary's finest screeched to a halt in front of us. Now
I've been stopped by the Old Bill before, but this was
a bit different. These had bright red faces, and
were clearly furious. explaining that we were
concerned for our 'friend's' safety only seemed to make
matters worse, as they reached for their charge sheets.
After isuing Court Summons to us both for driving the
wrong way down the motorway (I jest not!)they explained
that James's delay was due to them pulling him for a
faulty silencer. his defence came in the form of an
International Driving Licence in 22 languages with a similarly
incomprehensible insurance document. they had clearly become so
frustrated with him, and the thought of all that paperwork
if they did book him, that they had let him on his
way. We were the perfect target for their frustration.
While we were engaged with these gentlemen, James
sailed by ..........

I did click on your link a few days ago, but had
problems once I was in your site. I assume you've done a
similar link for this site in yours (hint, hint!).
My
big problem regarding the V50 is that no one seems to
be able to provide verifiable FACTS. Looking at
publications produced by Piaggio, you would be forgiven for
assuming there were 600,000 produced ... but if that is
the case, who had them? One rumour suggests that the
French had quite a number. OK, so where are they now? In
15 years of travelling Europe by Vespa, I've never
seen one! There again, the Piaggio parts bible (1977
edition) seems to suggest that the Austrians had a batch
... why? Hill climbing I presume!!!!
The American
guy who published a book regarding Vespa restoration
(name escapes me for now) cites a figure of 1.3 million
as having been produced (but then he also tells us
that the Cosa has a tube frame!).
Can anyone help?

Hi! Thanks for inviting me to your group! My name
is Bryan and I live in Chicago. I do a scooter
webpage called 2strokeBuzz (www.2strokebuzz.com) and I'd
like to invite everyone to take a look at the site and
consider contributing an article if you have the time or
inspiration; rally reports, stories about trips you've made,
technical tips, funny stories, or detailed histories of the
V50 moped (hint hint.) Also, I'm trying to assemble a
large gallery of scooter rally patches from around the
world, if you have any you could scan and send to me,
I'd love to see them.

Nice to meet you all! I
don't get the messages through email, so you can email
me at illnoise@... if you need to reach
me.

Happy scootering!
Bryan

Not content with owning two V50N Mopeds, I've
just tracked down a third ... it's orange, a perfect
match for my red and yellow ones! I'm currently trying
to prise it off of it's present owner (shouldn't be
too hard - he hates it!).
My beliefs about the '76
registered 'bike actually having been made in '73 have been
proved to be true. With this latest machine having been
registered in '75, the dealers at the time must have been
cursing Piaggio!
True facts are extremely difficult to
come by ... does anyone know any background history to
these machines? Rumour within the Veteran Vespa Club
suggests that 80 were imported to Britain, and
circumstantial evidence (I only know of 8 still in existence),
would seem to confirm this. Other voices suggest that
the model was sold for a while in France, although
I've never seen any proof.
Can anyone shed any
light?

This year's Annual Rally was held in Cheltenham,
a lovely spa town to the west of England.
I
broke my golden rule for the first time ever, and took
the car. Why? I had to travel south from London to
pick up my latest acquisition ... my second Vespa 50.
Six on the morning of 10th September was very misty
in London, so an unpleasant trip round the M25
motorway. Rain by the time I got to pick up the 'bike, but
glorious sunshine some 270 miles since I'd left home.
Cheltenham was looking good!
VVC Rallies are always small
but very welcoming, and I was pleased to note that a
couple of local scooter clubs had not only come along
for a look, but were actively involving themselves in
the planning of the Saturday ride-out round the
country lanes. I just had time to fill the 50 up with
petrol, before the ride-out commenced. A local scooterist
on a Lambretta kindly agreed to accompany me as I
was terrified of being left in a cloud of 2-stroke
smoke in the middle of the countryside wondering which
direction everyone else had taken! He didn't have to stay
with me for long ...... after about four miles,
strangling the bits off of the poor moped, the inevitable
happened in the form of an enormous heat-seizure (you know
what they say about 'bikes you haven't prepared
yourself?). I let him carry on, while I just managed to limp
back to base.
Arriving back, I retired the 'bike
for the weekend, and joined those with 'bikes too
valuable or too slow to risk on the public highway
propping up the bar. Amongst those was our premier Veteran
Parts dealer Mike Clark who not only managed to sell me
his whole stock of unique V50N spares, but had
brought along photos of the scooter and Vespa scene in
the area from the 1950s and '60s as well as things
like dealer passes to the Piaggio works, and other
priceless memorabilia. The hours 'til the evening meal
passed with a very relaxed pint or two, and lots of
friendly conversation.
The evening meal was held in the
social club and, as we were camping on site, was
eminently suitable. Lots of old friends had made the effort
to attend, but it was good to see quite a few new
faces. On returning to our tents, we were regailed with
loud music from Tippa's 24th birthday party. I won't
say the local band were bad, but I'd hate to have
parents who put on a 'do' like that for my
birthday!
Sunday morning saw lots of sunshine and a few sore
heads. The main concours was forming up with good
examples from most eras. Notable were a brace of
'arc-en-ceil' André Baldet dealer special GS150 VS5s, and Matt
Phillips' finely turned out Douglas 'Rod' model. I'm not
sure who won each category as I had to nip back early
after lunch (ably abetted by the fact that the same
band from the party the night before had been invited
to our event as Sunday lunchtime entertainment!).
Once again, the scene was of friends old and new
getting together with a single interest and a welcoming
attitude. A particular high spot for me was meeting Graham
Wilmott, from mid-Wales who rode down on his Sportique. I
have been in touch with Graham on the net for a couple
of years now, and his attempts to travel the Island
to attend VVC Rallies would fill a book! After many
promises to meet and 'phone friends, I had an uneventful
journey home ..... well, I did miss my turning, and have
to turn back at the Kent coast
