That's cool! I agree just taking what's already available in
AHistory would be wrong. As he's here I'd just like to give some
feedback on the book.
Brilliant.
You don't appreciate how hard a job producing something like this is
until you see it. I picked up the original slimline white version
with the green cover produced by Seventh Door (Panopticon '93 in
Coventry I think) but nothing prepared me for the latest mammoth
tome.
I only had a couple of niggles (sorry to pick up on these rather
than everything else - the stuff that's spot on is, well,
overwhelming). They all related to some of the 'dating notes':
The Big Bang - AH perpetuates the idea that the Terminus and Vipod
Mor stories somehow contradict each other, but could be aligned by
having the Vipod Mor's explosion triggering the Terminus fuel leak.
This is all rather complicated. Technically ALL ships that travel
back to the beginning of time and do not return would encounter each
other at the same point: the beginning. The fact that mass time
travel exists means that many ships could end up at the beginning or
the end of time. Vipod More and Terminus are just two that we know
about.
City of Death - this mentioned the problems with dating the story in
400,000BC because the first life was evolved earlier. While that may
be true, the entry didn't consider the possibility that when the
Jagaroth ship exploded it could have sent fragments BACKWARDS as
well as forwards in time. Obviously any version of Scaroth stuck in
a past devoid of life would die pretty quickly (if his genetic
material survived at all), but there's no reason the explosion in
400,000 BC didn't catalyse the creation of life milliojns of years
earlier.
Death Comes to Time - It doesn't get the same box-out treatment as
other stories, and seems to be the only one that has a "fans can
treat it with a pinch of salt" warning. What I noticed was that the
creation of the fraction was placed at a point when the Doctor
wasn't around, rather than during his lifetime. It also doesn't even
make mention of this as a possibility (or indeed any mention of the
Doctor being a founder member).
Considering how long the book is, my only having three niggles is a
testamnent to how good this body of work is. Even to the length of
distancing itself from some of the author's own works/opinions in
favour of a straight telling of the facts as seen. Even down to UNIT
dating which, despite having an opinion of my own, was probably
presented in the most neutral light possible.
