Subject: Stop the Sao Francisco River Diversion Project in Brazil
Dear friends,
The Brazilian government is trying to push through a highly destructive river diversion project against the wishes of large sectors of the population. A large proportion of the San Francisco River waters are to be diverted in order to irrigate vast sugar cane and soya plantations for agrofuels and other agroexports. The project would cause major deforestation and the destruction of the livelihoods of indigenous peoples and other communities. It could cause desertification, soil and groundwater salination and the way in which it is being pursued violates the Brazilian constitution as well as international conventions.
Please go to

and support the affected communities by signing a petition which calls for proper public hearings and judicial hearings regarding those plans. Many thanks.
Yours sincerely
