Subject: [UKWildlife] Saturday - Independent newspaper

In case any of you needs help in deciding which paper to buy tomorrow (Sat 24th), this might sway you...

Claudia (ex- Buglife)
.............................
In recognition of the huge declines in a whole range of British invertebrate species, from beetles to moths, and in a sweeping array of plants, The Independent newspaper will tomorrow donate 20p for every paper sold, which will be split equally between Buglife and Plantlife.  So if you do buy a newspaper tomorrow, please make it The Independent, not only will you be able to learn more about the real threat to Britain's wildlife, but you will also be helping directly to combat it.  Please Buy The Independent tomorrow.

Extracts from The Independent article promoting the venture:

"Golden eagles, majestic and rare, may catch the public imagination as threatened species, but it is becoming increasingly clear that the most endangered wildlife in Britain is much lowlier, and to many, much less charismatic: insects and plants.

Huge declines in a whole range of British insect species, from beetles to moths, and in a sweeping array of plants, especially the wildflowers of our cornfields, are becoming more and more apparent.  Yet although our insects and plants represent about 95 per cent of our biodiversity, and the threats to them are the greatest, they are much less in the public eye than our birds or our mammals, and public concern for them has been correspondingly much less.

Tomorrow The Independent will try to put that right by focusing efforts to protect our insects and wildflowers by two young, relatively small wildlife charities: Buglife and Plantlife."
