Subject: Thank you for telling Tony Blair to ban illegal timber
With your help, we are able to put pressure on him to make sure that the government only uses timber certified by the Forest Stewardship Council and introduce legislation to ban all imports of illegal timber into the UK.
Please encourage your family and friends to write to Tony Blair by directing them to www.greenpeace.org.uk/repeatoffender, and to find out what else you can do to help protect the world's remaining ancient forests, go to www.greenpeace.org.uk/forests.
A copy of your letter is included below.
In March 2001 you stated that: "We have already promised that as a government we will only purchase timber from legal and sustainable sources." But yet again Greenpeace has found illegally logged rainforest plywood from Papua New Guinea being used in the refurbishment of the Houses of Parliament. In Papua New Guinea ruthless robber barons are plundering the rainforest with impunity - their crimes ranging from illegal logging, to corruption, torture and rape.
It is clear that the timber procurement policy your government introduced in 2000 is not working. I urge you to ensure that the government only uses timber certified by the Forest Stewardship Council on construction sites, the best guarantee that wood products come from environmentally and socially responsible sources. It is also imperative that you immediately introduce legislation to ban the import of illegal timber into the UK. I look forward to hearing from you on this issue.
Yours sincerely
