Dear Ocean Defenders, In my last email, I wrote you about the mine on Rapu Rapu Island. This mining operation was recently revived despite toxic spills causing fish kills and environmental damage.
Arriving at Rapu Rapu, some 70 outrigger boats from local villages joined our ship, the Esperanza, in a protest against the mine. Many of these boats carried banners calling for the banks financing the mine, ABN-Amro and ANZ, to pull their funding. These local people are justifiably outraged. The rich marine ecosystem they rely on for food and livelihood is being destroyed for the profit of far off multinational companies.
I was proud to be here in protest with them, and we need you to stand with us.
This month, the Esperanza also responded to the site of the worst oil spill in the history of the Philippines - where a single hulled tanker sank in rough seas carrying 2.1 million litres of oil. We witnessed first hand the massive ecological destruction caused by this Petron Corporation chartered vessel.
Working with the Philippines Coast Guard, we did what we could to help - delivering relief supplies, conducting a scientific survey, and helping local fishermen position makeshift oil booms. And we will continue to hold Petron accountable for this man made disaster.
Please forward this message to friends and family. Communities and the environment impacted by the mining industry need our support.
