Newham Asian Women's Project

Skills Education & Awareness Training: Working with Asian women who
Self-harm

Aim:
This is a basic practice-based course aimed at helping participants
to work more effectively & appropriately with young Asian women who
self-harm & who maybe vulnerable to suicide as well as supporting
participants to gain the information required to use the Self-harm
Training Pack with their colleagues in a safe & appropriate manner.

Content:
exploring what self-harm is, why people self-harm & the functions of
self-harm; relationship between self-harm & suicide; why young Asian
women may be at higher risk; the role of culture & self-harm &
addressing inter-cultural working practices; managing responses,
attitudes, beliefs and feelings about self-harm; exploring &
identifying possible practical & easily accessible responses to self-
harm

Each participant will also receive a copy of the training
pack "Silent Scream" - Young Asian Women & Self-Harm: Handbook for
Professionals (worth £25)

Target Group:
All professionals involved in working with or providing and planning
services for young Asian women who self-harm or who may be vulnerable
to suicide. This would include teachers, youth workers, mental
health workers, nurses, primary, community and acute care workers,
local government staff, social care & voluntary sector workers and
private carers etc.

Dates:
Tuesday 25th January 2005
Wednesday 16th February 2005
