Hello,

My first time writing to the group.
I'd appreciate any help offered.

I'm interested in using the WS vocab method, but I'm
not clear on some aspects of using it.
I'd much appreciate it if some one could tell me
how to approach these particular aspects:

1)Where do learners place phrases/sentences?
a.Do they place them in the New Word column?
For example: In this sentence, 'Like the time
Grandfather dressed up as a scarecrow.'

The phrase: 'Like the time . . .'
The verbal phrase: ' . ..dressed up as . .'

b. If so, should there be a separate page, one for words,
another for phrases and yet another page for sentences?

2) In the above sentence, are learners to use
connecting words from the sentence?

3)When learners do not know a word, or how to use a word or
phrase, they look it up in a quality Eng-Eng
dictionary. After finding the definition, what do they
do with the meaning just found?
4)How many sentences are recommended for the My words
column?

Since it is mentioned that it is better to go slowly
and have learners flush out the meaning of a couple of
often used words, their usage, etc. in other words,
don't overload the learner with lots of vocabulary
words.
Yet in your sample of WS at the bottom you have loads
of words.

I teach J'ese learners. They're into word for word
translation big time. They're right away into the
dictionary (the ol' translation method) when they
don't understand a word or phrase.
I'd still like to have them use their J'ese-Eng
dictionaries, but not to the extent that they
currently use them.
5) If a 4th column for translated words,phrases
is added, what is its function? one of comparison?
one of consciousness raising?
6) Do the learners decide whether a word, phrase, etc.,
goes in the top space or the bottom space?

I know I've asked a lot of questions.
Any info on these issues will be greatly appreciated.

Cheers
